My ranking of the PSP APP Divison entries:
1. PSP-Maps by royale 2. IBrowse - Filebrowser and Minishell by grafele 3. PSParticlePlayer 1.0 by Mk2k 4. PSP Hardware Alarm Suite 2.6 bld 1648 by Mr305 5. Faintless Maker by sora101 6. QuickView by slicer4ever
I tested all entries on my PSP and rated them by *Ambience = graphical and accustical aspects (It is rated how good the application looks and, if there is sound, how good it sounds) *Control = how easy or how hard is it to control *Concept = is it a good idea in general, efficient, original *Personal = personal rating, is it useful for me, do I need it
# Review of: QuickView by slicer4ever ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- QuickView sounded pretty good for me. I expected a good SlideShow/PictureViewing programm with nice graphics, maybe some sound and additionally features. However, I "installed" this homebrew application. My first impression when I saw the Homebrew Icon0.png: That picture must have been created by MSPaint. So the first impression was: not that good. Let's see what the application itself promised. I started the application...suddenly some music started to play and some of my pictures were shown for some seconds. And it was laggy... So far, so good, my criteria: There is no graphical interface and no real controlling of this app (so handling this app is easy... but there could have been some more features). The images stored in PSP/PHOTO just popup to some metal music (That's ok, I like metal - but I guess most of the users don't) The concept is good, but the work was made badly. I expected much more. (This seems like some hard critics I guess, I know how haard coding can be, but this one is not good enough for entering this contest, I think)
Ambience: 2/10 Control: 5/10 Concept: 5/10 Personal: 1/10 (sry I really do not need it) ============= Altogether: 13/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: Easycxmb v3 by stefyx7 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have seen the screenshots already and they looked pretty good. The System Dialogs have been used, that's ok, they keep it looking professional. The Icon0.png is ok, too, and some music is played as well. I think, the concept is good, I know cmxb, which is great, and sometimes very hard to install, so it might be useful for many people, but the programming ain't that hard. The Wave in the background and the SysDialogs look very very good, but the language in the dialogs is a bit terrible. Controls are easy as the SysDialogs are used.
Ambience: 7/10 Control: 9/10 Concept: 4/10 Personal: 3/10 (Sorry, but I myself don't need it) ============= Altogether: 23/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: The Good Bookr 1.2 neo by phosphorous ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well, what was I expecting - a Bible reader based on a programm which phosphorous didn't code (Bookr^^). My first impression changed immediately when I saw the Icon0.png. Wow! That looks amazing! Great Icon0 design! So I started the application. I know that bookr looks great, but this is even better, very nice improvements! I don't know when I should ever have a need of reading the bible on my PSP, but I like this app, and it will stay on my MemoryStick. It's extremely easy to control and works very fast. It was developed almost perfect and is very clear, you know exactly what to do. So, here is my rating
Ambience: 8/10 Control: 10/10 Concept: 4/10 Personal: 4/10 (Maybe it will be useful for me at sometime, but not yet necessary) ============= Altogether: 26/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: PaintMIXER v2.6.0 by Gefa ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another drawing application in the crowd of those 1 million drawing apps...but stop! It comes along with quite more features than most of those nasty other drawing applications do. First impression: The Icon0.png and Pic1.png are ok, a bit simple, but ok. Let's view the application: The Interface is clear and good (looks like MSPaint). So far, I tried each function. The application works pretty good and I haven't noticed any bugs till yet. I thin^k it is a pretty good drawing application, but I have to mention some personal aspects as well (I myself wrote Bermuda CS a while ago). I am a bit disappointed of him stealing some of my graphics. He could have mentioned me in the credits of course (I am not sure if he stole them, but they look exactly the way the graphics of Bermuda do - if I am wrong, please inform me). Due to the fact everything works proper and clear, I have to say Gefa did a good job, the app is not overloaded and crowded and the controling is quite easy, even though some functions could have been improved a bit and the controls could have been described a bit better. All in all, a good work.
Ambience: 7/10 Control: 9/10 Concept: 4/10 Personal: 3/10 (Sry but really don't need that due to I've got my own drawing application) ============= Altogether: 23/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: PSP Hardware Alarm Suite 2.6 bld 1648 by Mr305 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PSP Hardware Alarm Suite - sounds a bit like a tool that observes the PSP's hardware and stuff and looks for issues, but is it really what I expected? Well, the Icon0.png looks very nice, yes, amazing! Seems like an application with good graphics But it is definately not what I expected. It is a Suite containing a clock, a function that connects to the internet and synchronizes the clock via Internet (and some other function like USB etc). And as I think thisapplication to do is to set an alarm, turns your psp off or in Sleepmode and "wakes up" your PSP automatically. A very nice idea I think and a very good job. The controls are described clearly and the graphics are amazing, but the job it does is a bit confusing, it takes time to understand what it is good for.
Ambience: 9/10 Control: 7/10 Concept: 8/10 Personal: 5/10 ============= Altogether: 29/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: PSParticlePlayer 1.0 by Mk2k ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wohoo...my first impression of the eboot Icon was: dang, that looks amazing! Well, I already knew what it does, what it is good for and why it was made, so there were no more expectations. The application plays mp3 while it shows up a "particle-visualisation" with some great graphics, which can be manipulated. This app is more or less an example of what is possible with the PGE Engine. It works fast and looks like a project that caused a lot of work, and which is finally an application of great quality. The controls are mentioned in the readme file, so there should be no issues by using the application. The concept is also great (It got potential, why not making a Mp3-Player with lots of visualisations?!). What to say about the graphical layout? Well, there are no real graphics giving this application a nice layout, but the Particles itself generate a nice ambience...but there could be a nice menu with some graphics. So here is my rating:
Ambience: 7/10 Control: 7/10 Concept: 10/10 Personal: 7/10 ============= Altogether: 31/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: PSP-Maps by royale ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know this entered last compo as well, but it is still great and it is still my favourite. Well, the Icon0 and Pic1 are ok, they fit to the application, but they aren't amazing. The programm itself doesn't have an amazing GUI itself, but that is not an important aspect in that program. Well what does it do? It connects to the internet and brings googlemaps etc to your PSP. So I think, the concept is great and the job he made is awesome. The programm is quite fast for the conditions of the PSP. The control is a bit hard at the beginning, but it is described in the readme file, so no worries. The menu of the programm is clear and easy to use. All in all I think it is "noob friendly".
Ambience: 6/10 Control: 8/10 Concept: 10/10 Personal: 9/10 ============= Altogether: 33/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: pspSecretary by ab5000 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Couldn't get this one here running on my PSP, so I have to rate it via screenshot and description. This app seems to be a portable calendar. As I can see on the screenshots, the design is quite empty(gray and white) but also clear. The controls are mentioned, it uses only 4 "buttons", which means for me it's easy to use What can I say about the concept...well I think it's not very special... there are many of so called "calendars" for PSP, so the concept isn't that great.
Ambience: 6/10 Control: 9/10 Concept: 3/10 Personal: 1/10 (sry, It won't work for me, so I don't need it) ============= Altogether: 19/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: Faintless Maker by sora101 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I once had the same idea to make a RPG Maker for PSP, so I like the concept a lot. The Eboot uses standard Icon0, so I can't really rate that. The Application comes along with two applications, Faintless Map Editor, which can create RPG Maps (and they look very, I mean verrrrrry nice!) and Faintless itself, the RPG Game with your selfmade map. Creating the maps is quite simple, you can change between tile choosing and the map by pressign triangle, all in all the functions are explained in the readme file, but they might be a bit confusing. It was definitely a great job, that Faintless, but the menu itself looks terrible, the ambience of the menu and the map maker itself is pretty bad. The red just won't fit into that application, and the menubackground uses the Neoflash Spring Coding Compo 2008 splash image (w00t?).
Ambience: 5/10 Control: 7/10 Concept: 9/10 Personal: 5/10 ============= Altogether: 26/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: nandTool 0.4NEO by cory1492 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This one here is an allround Nandpplication...dump your nand, reset it, modify your idstorage and much more. This one would be great with Pandora (correct me if it is already ). It works good and may help sometimes...what more should I say. Ah yes. There is no real GUI...dang...it's just colored font. Only the nice fade effect can push the ambience a bit. The controls are totally clear and every menupoint is even explained in the readmefile. That means it is "noobfriendly" (more or less, wrong usage can kill your PSP). What should I say about the concept...I have the feeling that there are lots of NandDumpers already...so it's not pretty original.
Ambience: 3/10 Control: 9/10 Concept: 6/10 Personal: 4/10 ============= Altogether: 22/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: Xplora v1.6 by ne0h ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Another Shell in that Shellcrowd of shells for PSP. Well, anyway, I'll give it a try. I am not very happy with the graphical interface (arghh...that bevel...). But the amount of functions can adjust that (I think it is) issue. Tons of useful features (maybe a bit overloaded), easy to reach because of "noobfriendly" controls. BUT: I am very disappointed of those bugs...for example the Homebrewsorter corrupted my whole homebrews on the MS.
Ambience: 6/10 Control: 8/10 Concept: 3/10 Personal: 3/10 ============= Altogether: 20/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Review of: IBrowse - Filebrowser and Minishell by grafele ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well this one here is a Filebrowser and Shell at the same time...that pushes the concept rating a bit. The design is very "descent", it looks very good. And it is one of my favourite PSP Shells, because, hell yeah, it is not overloaded. It's clear, got simple controls and is easy to use ("noob friendly" again ). It comes along with an appropriated amount of very useful features such as an UMD Dumper, File and folderhandling and unzipping files. And one important thing, in comparison to Xplora (which isn't really bad): I couldn't find any terrible bugs.
Ambience: 9/10 Control: 8/10 Concept: 6/10 Personal: 8/10 ============= Altogether: 31/40 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  What's this? IBrowse 2th and Xplora 10th? Are you serious? Are you the brother or the sister of grafele or something like it? When I've see for the first time Xplora I think to a new and incredible shell and you have writed that PSParticlePlayer have a better ambience than Xplora! Have you seriously ever seen Xplora? ? Incredible, you have writed that has no concept??? There's no one shell like this, this is the most user-friendly shell and different to the other, the graphic is awesome! Please, see all the programm before post a rewiew! ne0h, can the homebrew sorter really corrupt all the MS? Please have a look in this rewiew, I cannot see something like it! bumuckl, you cannot vote as personal use IBrowse ( 8 ) and Xplora ( 3 ), this homebrews have the same function, Xplora open a lot of files that IBrowse don't open!Really incredible!
Sorry for my english, I'm spanish

No, I am not related to grafele I like grafeles shell alot, it has not too much and not too less functions
the problem with Xplora was that bug...I used the homebrewsorter and all my homebrewfiles were broken. That was very dissapointing. The shell itself is good, yes. but the fact that there are such bugs possible have to be mentioned.
I understand your behaviour, and maybe I'll give it a second try...but this is my opinion...so I am sorry for you...but that's it actually

No problem, for me is not a problem, but jacpot has a good reasons! The bug cannot is the only one problem, you have to become a judger, I think that you cannot decrease all the score for a bug! Anyway thanks...

I think the review is fine bumuckl, but that's just me. I've said it before regarding reviews, and I stand by it (though keep in mind as an entrant I have no authority) - a judges opinion shouldn't be mutable after they have cast their vote, it should not be up for argument by anyone who has entered (letting that happen would just be fixing the score like previous voters tried to do.)
That said, are reviewers not supposed to take into account the motion kit/original entry stuff too? Or is that going to be a final/internal thing?
------- My own personal thoughts: Thanks for the feedback on my app bumuckl :-) though, you could read my posts in the thread regarding the gui (pandora/dc are limited by the hack to make them work on slim's hardware) and 'original' - it's not like I slapped it together for the compo in the last few weeks, it's been around, being used and evolving for nearly 2 years outdating all except 2 dumping-only apps - this is just the first time I have really gone out of my way to post it anywhere.

@cory1492: I knew that it was meant to look this way (This "plain text" look keeps it looking "hacky" and professional), but I cannot rate the "ambience" good when there is no graphical skills shown, so sry, but I think this one does not really fit into that compo (that's my opinion). It is definitely great and it will stay on my MS. I think it would fit better into another programming compo about "real psp hacking".
@ne0h: The shell itself may be great, but yes, I really do not like the GUI. Maybe it is wrong to decrease some points because of bugs, but this one was very, I mean, very annoying.
@slicer4ever: Hmm I know that it i shard work, but this one is not even finished...you should not have entered this compo I think. Make it great and participate in the next compo
And don't forget, this is just one review of a lot...and there is still Dr. Neo who is judging. So don't be pissed if you ain't happy with my results.
And please, if I was offensive or was too hard in criticism, please let me know
