Lordus says... ApprenticeMinusDS is a Nintendo DS Gamegear and Sega MasterSystem emulator that uses hardware rendering.
This version has scaling support for Gamegear mode and a region selection option, to enable playing of multi-region games in non-Japanese mode. The hardware renderer was completely rewritten to support the scaling, but there was not enough time to test it, and there are some known (and unknown bugs) that i introduced, that will be fixed as soon as possible. Mostly it should be fine though. See the readme for more info on known issues and how to get around them, if possible.
My opinion: Apprentice Minus is pretty good SMS/GG emulator. I had the chance to test 4 games(Sonic the hedgehog III,Strider, and Streets of rage II,Mortal Kombat III), and they worked really well except MKIII which had a little slowdown.

The basic interface is meant to be simple and easy witout much colors (I've asked salz to do me a very very simple skin) and I've worked on a easy to use user skinning support for over 1 Week. So users wanting more can set every picture, the position of every button, place of every text, color of every text and every key-binding how they want it......
Then you could have had added themes... I rate every single detail...that's how reviews meant to be...
edit: too much "simple"s
-Interface needs more work!It looks very simple.
Interface Interface needs more work , it just looks very simple ...
1.5/5
Where do you see the word "simple" many times? Its the same section...

@"simple" there had been about 5 in my post xD
it was just a little critism ^^" the detail of high custimizable options youve seemed to overseen ;0
mhm at least just some suggestion for future reviews,
Interface Graphics Design On apps speed, usability (MenuDo just as an example) , compability , how complicated/user friendly (see MenuDo), how much it make sense (example DSBash, if you have a WiFi spot near you there is a PC usualy too...) , originality of the idea (@texteditor, how many of them are there actualy on the DS) , funfactor ( Paint Black, its mainly a funny app) etc.... should take a big part in the rating.
Sure, apps should have graphics, but I have the feeling youve cared too much on Graphic/Design/style

Wow good reviews I like how you actually could point out the nice finer details rather then looking for the bad stuff as a whole, after seeing my position in the other review I began to lose confidence in my app so I'm kind of shocked of having it rated so high O_o But I guess the end user will always see how good a program really is compared to the coder who will be amazed just by a specific feature they managed to achieve on such a limited hardware.

Wee, I got in last place!
I want to address some of the remarks though. I did have to rush a bit to get it finished for the compo, but that just means I worked more consecutive hours to get it done. At that time I had tested it but not seen any bugs. I'm aware of the sleeping bug though and have tried to resolve it in my new update, but as that didn't do the trick, right now I'm having little time and little luck figuring out what's causing it.
Smoother animation is true, but since I use the delays from the original program, I figured it should look the same. There already are animation states though, I think the problem lies in the VBL counter, I've used though.
There won't be any map, sound effects or a gui, simply because that's not how it's supposed to be. It's a port of an existing program, not a newly invented program. I do have lots of features in mind for this though that will make it much better.
Marking a path with the Stylus is worth thinking about, but since you just have to move the mouse around in the original program, the only way I can do that is to have the Stylus touching the screen.
Anyway, I didn't enter this into the competition hoping to win, but just to get some comments and see if people liked this. Fortunately they do.
Oh, and if you want to see how the original looks, and you don't want to download it, you can go to http://www.webneko.net

Nice, review. Although, your review on some entry feels unsatisfying. Sorry if i would sound so annoying.
Well you did say.
Every application have been fully tested many times to make sure i haven't missed anything. So heres my opinion.
Maybe its only, menuDo, though. Dont get me wrong Im not asking you to about changing your rating. I do actually like it if it reaches a lower score. (Original entry bonus is awesome for the next compo)
I just saw it a little confusing, you know what I mean?
-Background animation(waves -psp xmb like-) is glitchy , and it shouldn't be pre-animated anyway...
The background isnt pre-rendered, and, although incomplete I didnt actually felt that the wave is actually glitchy. Well, your the first one to say so actually.
-Selecting any menu except "Games" , it shows a black screen , and then you have to go back. -Nothing other works but "Game" menu Well, like I said in the thread. It goes back whenever it couldnt find the folder or .nds that you assigned in the ini. Games works because you the menu was assigned to look at the games folder (see: ini).
-The game selection menu is bugged...it can even shutdown(!) my DS. -Serious bugs with "Game" menu
Maybe there is a game folder, but, again, in the thread I instructed the user to use subfolders. Seemed like you didnt download the custom covers, or followed the instruction.
Usability At the moment its definetly not useful... I'm not sure if you read the features in the thread, like skinning, loading nds homebrew, etc.
Graphics are nice , but the graphical glitches are serious problem...
Bugs found: -Glitchy pre-animated background
Please ellaborate the glitches. I would love to know what glitches does were, and solve them.
Nice design , even with the current (huge)bug list... Maybe, I missed something but I couldnt find some explained bugs on the review.
And there is a little problem about the Mechanics. (soulanger is now 80% annoying and sorry)
Pros & Cons : Min/Max rating : 0 .. 5 Interface : Min/Max rating : 0 .. 5 Graphics : Min/Max rating : 0 .. 5 Design : Min/Max rating : 0 .. 5 Bonus : Min/Max rating : 0 .. 5 Yeah, I know interface are essential for an application but having 3 category, is an overkill don't you think?
Pros & Cons also adds to the graphic factor. For example ApprenticeMinusDS got this at his Pros and Cons.
Pros & Cons
+Emulates most games perfectly at full speed! +Sound emulation is also nice +Easy to use menu
-Gui gfx could have been a little better(especially the logo "ApprenticeMinusDS")...
3.5/5 Perfect emulation with full speed and nice sound emulation. Apprentice is perfect for what it's aiming. (emulation) Indeed, it should get a perfect. But it has cons of being too simple on Gui and graphics. So, it gets a 3.5. Also you didnt suggest on how he could improve the gui.
and my SUGGESTIONS on how to improve your app. So, basically we get a 15 scores for the having a perfect graphics. +5 score for Usability. If you get both youll perfect the pros and cons. Another +5. A bonus point that I don't actually quite get. +2
UApaint is certainly one of the best apps out there. I use it alot, but dont you think its too advantangeous for it with this mechanics? UApaint an app for making graphics and pixels. Graphic programs needs a great interface for it to actually prove useful. Graphics is essential for this app. I'm not saying UApaint got a high scrore because of this mechanic, but even without a similar mechanic, it would still prove to be the best.
Sorry for being annoying and sucky. I apologize. Dont take it too serious its only my opinion okay?
edit: I actually don't know what is being judged on design. Is it graphics design? Concept design?
edit2: Also any suggestions on what to add on Balik Bayan DevWifi 's gui?

Sorry if i would sound so annoying.
Don't worry , im not going to ignore your post..."im all ears".
So, basically we get a 15 scores for the having a perfect graphics
No , you're totally wrong, you can only get MAX 5.
Design = how everything is designed to work , and how well its combined with interface...in short : concept design.
Interface = GUI , and how responsive it is
Graphics = self explanatory...
Also you didnt suggest on how he could improve the gui.
That's not my job , i just had to point it out. Developer will find a way...
Well, like I said in the thread. It goes back whenever it couldnt find the folder or .nds that you assigned in the ini. Games works because you the menu was assigned to look at the games folder (see: ini).
Well , you should have had made a more polished release or ...don't actually release it yet. It can become a great homebrew , but right now it isn't useful.
Please ellaborate the glitches. I would love to know what glitches does were, and solve them.
Im refering to the background which is very glitchy...
The background isnt pre-rendered, and, although incomplete I didnt actually felt that the wave is actually glitchy. Well, your the first one to say so actually.
I didn't knew that , but that's how it looks...
edit: Main post updated : added section "Scoring system explained".

Hi there Conle.
Thank you for your well balanced reviews. Much appreciated!
As the author of sDepS I have a few comments.
Very simple interface which isn't bad , but could have been much better.
A much better interface... How? I can see how you could have a much better interface if you had more features in the application, but at this very basic level of functionality I don't see how the interface could have been MUCH better? Please let me hear your suggestions.
Usability I don't think that its really useful.
If you want to measure how many steps you walk each day or the time spent jogging etc. it is indeed VERY useful.
Usability I mean...i don't plan to walk or run holding my DS...
You don't need to hold it. If you close it, the screens turn off to save battery but the app keeps running. You could then wear it in a pouch attached to a belt etc.
Usability There are tiny devices that do exactly the same...
But now you don't have to buy one. Cool right! Besides, if the fact that a similar or better device is available on another platform than the DS makes the application useless, most homebrew would be useless. Like, if you want to listen to music, you should go buy an iPod etc. So, the availability of similar products on other platforms is not relevant to judging homebrew applications IMHO.
Thanks

Hi , and thanks! Good luck with your (unique)entry too!
If you want to measure how many steps you walk each day or the time spent jogging etc. it is indeed VERY useful.
I agree , but (at least , personaly) i don't find it useful to always have my DS in a pocket or whatever.
A much better interface... How? I can see how you could have a much better interface if you had more features in the application, but at this very basic level of functionality I don't see how the interface could have been MUCH better? Please let me hear your suggestions.
Hmm ... i was thinking something similar with "My weight loss coach" : See a video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waSa_5f2-Ao
Of course don't copy it exaclty , add your own style...
Now , that would be fun to use...
So, the availability of similar products on other platforms is not relevant to judging homebrew applications IMHO.
Usability There are tiny devices that do exactly the same...
Don't worry , this was just my personal opinion , didn't affect score at all...

Hi Conle,
While is respect your review and i won't discuss the rating you give for the various parts of the app i must disagree with some of your remarks.
It's about Project JDS
Well , it does what it says , but you better don't expect to learn much from it. You probaly don't know what it takes to learn Japanese. I might be wrong but then i don't understand your remark. I got several hunderd of messages telling me that this was the right tool for them to learn the basics. So there must be something worth using in it.
Usability Honestly , not useful. Don't expect to learn much... Hmmm, for what point of view you say 'not useful'? Not useful for you or just in common? Like a Bible app isn't useful for a atheïst. The app itself can be useful but not for this particulair person. That doesn't mean that the app is useless. An addition to the learning. This app does the job to help you with memorizing the first 142 characters, their stroke order and how that sound. After that you still have to learn about 500 kanji's to read a newspaper and have a common impression what's in it. Een a marathon starts with the first step.
Anyway, as said. I respect the points you gave and i would like to express my gratitude for your time to make the review.
Thanks

Hi there AshaiRey.
I agree with all your comments on the review. I (A speaker of japanese) know that flashcards ,like presented in you app, are a valuable aid in learning the japanese characters.
I'm thinking the reviewer expected to learn the japanese language by using you app not realizing that it teaches basic(Hiragana & katagana right?) japanese characters.
