ArrPirate's Reviews of the DS
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:03:27 PM »
DS Apps:

Please note that I entered a program in this section called 'Health Monitoring Tool Kit'. As such, I will not review it as part as my main review. However, at the end, for completion's sake, I will write what i think of it and where in the ordering I think it should be, but for fairness it shouldn't be considered part of the main review.

Ace Attorney DS:

The splash screen was very professionally done. I loved it. Unfortunately, the program locked up as soon as the first in-game screen showed up, the options menu.

DSwiki:

This program is really neat. I like the interface and I think it's rather useful. I will be using it fairly often.

HWOS2:

Crashes. I can't review it.

DSision2:

I love this interface! It's so pretty. Not entirely useful to me, as I like ysmenu, but well done.

Ands-PDF:

The interface is horrid. It's basically just a console. Text. That's pretty much it. When you move the cursor down the menu it doesn't autoscroll. It's horrid. I hate it.

Mario Paint Composer DS Paratrooper Release:

To be fair, I'm hearing impaired. A lot of this was probably lost to me. It looks very nice, very professional, and what I could hear of it, it was pretty good.

SutraDS:

The scrolling background made me feel like I was going to be sick. It was not pleasant. The animations put me into the mindset of corpses, which is not a pleasant mindset to have when thinking about a ***-themed program. Also, the *****-based navigation interface is... distasteful. On the other hand, a few positions were interesting and I might try them out.

myPiano:

Another sound-based application. It's hard for me to be fair with these. I didn't hear anything at all when I played with it. The interface is very simplistic and not very pleasant to look at.

Wee Basic:

Not really that useful to me. I wonder if it will be useful to much of anyone. Writing code on a DS is not a pleasant experience.

DSBash:

The loading screen's scrolling background made me ill. I don't like things like that. I like bash and I would have enjoyed this reader, but I can't get online mode to work. It keeps giving me errors, saying it can't find votes.

Ordering from best to worst:

1. Ace Attorney DS 18 +10 (28)
2. DSwiki 20 +5 (25)
3. Mario Paint Composer DS Paratrooper Release 17 +5 (23)
4. DSision2 14 +5 (19)
5. DSBash 15 +0 (15)
6. SutraDS 8 +5 (13)
7. Ands-PDF 7 +5 (12)
8. myPiano 1 +10 (11)
9. Wee Basic 3 +5 (8)
10. HWOS2 0 +5 (5)

DS Games

SnailRace:

The graphics are cute and it's a reasonable game. I like it, though I don't fully understand it.

Brix:

I love this game. I love puzzles. I played the original version of the game and loved it. The graphics are ok and the puzzles are very well thought out.

Glubies:

Fun if simple game. The graphics are good and I enjoyed the unique gameplay. I've never lead creatures around by their tongue before.

Natura:

On a touch screen unit, why would someone put the menu on the top screen? The way text scrolled on the screen was annoying. Part of a word would start to print, run out of room, flicker, and move to the next line. The intro text is a lot to read and there's no way to skip it. It's a boring start. The gameplay may appeal to some, but not to me. It's a simplistic platformer.

Balloon Pop:

Pretty fun game. I like 'tower defense' style game and this is a silly one but it's ok.

Vahalla DS:

The graphics on this game are amazing. I love the animations. This game is very well done.

Vector Tower:

This is an awesome tower defense game! I love it! So fun!

Anime Jo:

I like the graphics in this game but I just didn't like the gameplay.

Alice and Marisa:

You touch fruit. You give the fruit to the girl. Repeat. It's not a good game.

Bill and Ted:

This is a very fun, if challenging game. The graphics aren't very good, but the awesome part is the gameplay. That and Bill and Ted rock. Party on.

RGB DS:

Pretty decent puzzle game with a nice twist. I like it.

Shooting Range:

This is a game?! This is not a game. This is nothing. This is trash. Can you click a sprite? How about if it move over here? How about in the original position? Again in the second position? Wow! I'd give this 'game' a negative score if I could.

Ukke:

On my DS it showed nothing but white screens.

Bouncy Marble:

The graphics are bland, the gameplay isn't very good either.

5 Dice:

A pretty good Yahtzee clone. It's fun and does what it advertises.

Search Eye DS:

This basically recreates those 'find the hidden object' things from the magazines in doctor's offices. Boring, but I guess it could appeal to some people.

Jangki:

This is a really good game. Wish I knew how to play it.

DronS:

This is a clone of the Tron lightcycle game. It's ok. Not spectacular.

Ordering of best to worst:

1. Vector Tower 20 +5 (25)
2. Brix 20 +5 (25)
3. Vahalla DS 20 +5 (25)
4. Bill and Ted 15 +5 (20)
5. Glubies 15 +5 (20)
5 Dice 10 +5 (15)
6. RGB DS 10 +5 (15)
7. Jangki 10 +5 (15)
8.SnailRace 8 +5 (13)
9. Balloon Pop 7 +5 (12)
10. Natura 5 +5 (10)
11. Anime Jo 5 +5 (10)
12. Ukke 0 +10 (10)
13. Bouncy Marble 5 +5 (10)
14. Search Eye DS 5 +5 (10)
15. DronS 10 +0 (10)
16. Alice and Marisa 1 +5 (6)
17. Shooting Range 0 +5 (5)

This is the review for my own program, for completion.

Health Monitoring Tool Kit:

It is useful. The art is pleasing. However, its usefulness is limited as its target audience is a small subset of the DS community.

+5 originality, 10 points for art, usefulness, etc. 15 total. That'd place my program at 5th or 6th place.

I made the menu quickly because I needed it, I planned to put some elements on the touch but couldn't because of the lack of time.

Constructive reviews helps me to improve the game, good ideas like the menu can be implemented after. So if you have other things to notice, please do it :)
