Dino340's App Reviews
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:34:00 PM »
For these reviews I will be using the scale that ollipolli used in his reviews mainly because I don’t feel like thinking up my own and I believe that his is the most fair. Also I apologize for butchering the spacing on the score table as i wrote this in word and copied it over.

Total                                   [-20...+20] (100%)

Ace Attorney DS-This looks and sounds awesome for the most part. The opening theme music works very well; unfortunately I can’t get it to work properly. The first time I loaded it I started doing the tutorials and got to the second one before it locked up and now I cannot even choose anything as soon as I select the “game” button it locks up. This looks like a very professional app with a lot of potential. From what I have heard from others it works great.
Pros: Amazing looking intro, cool concept,
Cons: Pretty big file size needed, beeping while someone is talking drives me nuts, I cannot get it to work on my Supercard DS One, some graphical glitches as well (a part of PW’s arm would look really weird then go back to normal.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+2]  ( 20%) Full marks if it worked for me
Graphics                             [+4]  ( 15%) Looks awesome
Sound                                [+1]  ( 15%) The beeping text drove me crazy
Idea/Innovation                 [+4]  ( 20%) Definitely a cool idea
Usability                             [+1]  ( 20%) Again full marks if it worked
Motion support                  [+1]  (  5%)
Original entry                     [+1]  (  5%)
==========================================
Total                                  [+14] (100%)

MPCDS-I won’t be reviewing this one seeing as I helped on the design team and therefore have a slight bias towards it :P

DSBash-This is definitely one of my favourite apps, I love reading bash quotes and am addicted to IRC so this is pretty cool as I don’t need to be at my computer to read quotes. The text resizing is pretty cool if you have trouble reading the small text and the interface works well. I didn’t try out the MP3 player but then again it doesn’t need sounds to be a good app.
Pros: Online and Offline mode so you don’t always need to have internet, MP3 player for if you have to have music on your DS, Resizable text.

Cons: None really except that it is kind of slow while it is searching for MP3’s and downloading quotes but those are excusable.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+4]  ( 20%) I really liked it
Graphics                             [+2]  ( 15%) Bit plain but looks pretty good
Sound                                 [+1]  ( 15%) Sounds not needed but a point for MP3
Idea/Innovation                 [+3]  ( 20%) Cool idea
Usability                             [+3]  ( 20%) Works great
Motion support                  [-1]  (  5%)
Original entry                     [-1]  (  5%)

Total                                  [+11] (100%)

Health Monitor-I’m not diabetic nor do I really keep track of what I eat so I don’t exactly know how a program that keeps track of your weight and eating habits should work, but if anything I would say that this is a great one to do it. It seems to have everything in it that one would need if they wanted to keep track of their diet.
Pros: Allows you to keep track of your diet and weight on something that you usually have with you all the time, your DS! Very unique and useful app if it’s something that you would need.
Cons: The text is kinda hard to press which makes the double tapping selection method difficult, I don’t really like how after you enter something into the diet menu and it saves it takes you back to the main menu, but that’s just me.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+3]  ( 20%) Really cool program
Graphics                             [+2]  ( 15%) Looks good but the BG is distracting
Sound                                 [ 0 ]  ( 15%) Doesn’t need it, doesn’t have it
Idea/Innovation                 [+4]  ( 20%) Really Helpful for those who
Usability                             [+3]  ( 20%) Works well and is easy
Motion support                   [-1]  (  5%)
Original entry                     [+1]  (  5%)
==========================================
Total                                  [+12] (100%)

Hwos2-Looks pretty cool but I can’t get it to find any of the apps that were on the card with it.
Pros: Neat way of making a file browser
Cons: My card already has one that works fine, other than games if I selected anything on the main menu it would just go back to saying “Welcome Garrett”, couldn’t find any of the other homebrew that was with it.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [ 0 ]   ( 20%) didn’t really like it
Graphics                             [+1]  ( 15%) looked ok
Sound                                [ 0 ]   ( 15%)
Idea/Innovation                [+1]  ( 20%) it’s already on the cards
Usability                            [+1]  ( 20%) didn’t really work for me
Motion support                  [-1]  (  5%)
Original entry                    [-1]  (  5%) there’s 2 of these
==========================================
Total                                 [+1] (100%)

MyPiano-I guess it’s a piano doesn’t make any sounds though, why doesn’t it take up the full screen instead of having to choose several octaves?
Pros: Something fun to play around with if it worked.
Cons: Silent, can only view one octave at a time, gives me an error when I press a button saying its missing a file.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [ 0 ]   ( 20%)
Graphics                             [+2]  ( 15%) Looks pretty good
Sound                                [-3]  ( 15%) There should be sound but there isn’t
Idea/Innovation                 [+1]  ( 20%) Kind of a cool idea
Usability                             [ 0 ]   ( 20%) Doesn’t work
Motion support                  [+1]  (  5%)
Original entry                     [+1]  (  5%)

Ands-pdf-Sweet a working PDF viewer for the DS, loaded the included file fine, the text recognition works great, I don’t like how it defaults to holding the DS sideways, but I really like the drag to size the viewing window function it lets me see what parts of the document that i wanna see.
Pros: DS PDF viewer, text recognition works great
Cons: The gap between screens makes it kinda hard to read when the DS is in book mode (I really should have played with the rom a little bit more sorry folks.)

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+4]  ( 20%) Really cool app
Graphics                             [+1]  ( 15%) Not very attractive but it works
Sound                                [ 0 ]   ( 15%)

Original entry                     [+1]  (  5%)

Total                                   [+12]  (100%)

DSision: A pretty cool menu, works well for booting the homebrew, I like how it looks and functions well.
Pros: Looks good and boots the homebrew fine
Cons: There is no quick scroll and the icons refuse to move if I hold down a direction instead of speeding up as I had hoped they would.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+3]  ( 20%) I thought it was pretty cool
Graphics                             [+3]  ( 15%) Looks really good
Sound                                 [ 0 ]   ( 15%)
Idea/Innovation                 [+1]  ( 20%) works good but DS card has one

DSwiki-The concept behind this is pretty cool an offline Wikipedia browser, unfortunately I can’t get it to work, I just get 2 black screens when it loads.
Pros: Wikipedia on DS
Cons: Doesn’t load for me

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+2]  ( 20%) The idea is there
Graphics                             [ 0 ]   ( 15%) I can’t see anything
Sound                                [ 0 ]   ( 15%)

WeeDS: A basic programming tool for the DS, cool I guess but I hate typing on the touch screen so this would be of no use to me.
Pros: Runs your program and helps you debug, keyboard is responsive.
Cons: Not very well suited to the DS, it’s basically a text entry device.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+1]  ( 20%) Not really all that useful
Graphics                             [+1]  ( 15%) Keyboard looks nice
Sound                                 [ 0 ]   ( 15%)
Idea/Innovation                 [+1]  ( 20%) For programming nuts only
Usability                             [+2]  ( 20%) Hard to type

SutraDS: Well basically it teaches you KamaSutra, I guess this could be useful if you pull out your DS to figure out a position. It actually works pretty well but the images are distracting while you are trying to read. Also there are WAAAYYYY to many *****es; I mean the title is spelled using them, and the buttons to go to the next thing are *****es.....
Pros: Teaches you some moves to use with the ladies ; ) looks pretty good and even has a moving picture showing you how to perform most of them, even lets you read up on the position.
Cons: Lacks a disclaimer in the App warning of graphic content, far too liberal use of the *****.

Pros/Cons/Personal Notes [+2]  ( 20%) I thought this was cool
Graphics                             [+2]  ( 15%) Pictures look pretty good
Sound                                [ 0 ]   ( 15%)
Idea/Innovation                 [+3]  ( 20%) Rather innovative
Usability                             [+3]  ( 20%) Easy to use
Motion support                  [-1]  (  5%)
Original entry                     [+1]  (  5%)

And after posting this I realized that I forgot a ranking list so here ya go:

1. Ace Attorney DS [+14]
2. Health Monitor [+12]
2. Ands-PDF [+12]
4. DSbash [+11]
5. SutraDS [+10]
6. DSision [+8]
7. DSwiki [+6]
8. WeeDS [+5]

Also after reading albinofrenchy's reply I realized that i had missed a rather large feature on his app and have now amended the review and top 10 list accordingly.

I wish there was an easy way to resize viewing window.
Pros: DS PDF viewer, text recognition works great
Cons: Needs an easy way to resize the window, lacks the ability to drag the PDF around with the stylus like Adobe.

I mean, not for nothing, but what was your issue with zoom? Also, the stylus stuff should work in the default (not text recognition) view. Was it not?

Sorry about missing, that I really only played around with the apps for 5 minutes or so each before writing this, I've amended it accordingly.
