CIC Lockout Chip Defeater
« on: May 06, 2006, 03:07:26 PM »
Tomy from Tototek.com figured out a way to defeat the SNES lockout chip.  Here are the details of a SNES lockout breaker.  Will the Neo SNES flash cart contain a CIC chip, a lockout chip defeater, or will it require a real SNES cart for booting?

Cherryroms kicked the bucket apparently; anyone have a link with info on defeating the CIC?

There are 4 different versions of the SNES in the USA.

1. separate sound module, cart locked in when powered on, "eject" printed on eject button
2. sound module built into main board, no cart lock, "eject" molded into eject button
3. additional refinements to version 2, sticker below power switch
4. new mini size, no RF, no s-video, no RGB video

SNES CIC lockout chips seems quite easy, maybe Dr.Neo invented something new for avoiding them in a smart way (or detecting/emulating or simulating a different one when needed detecting the ROM's zone).

The CIC is not easy to duplicate, or get around in general (without modifying the console).  No one in the public domain really understands its calculations, and even back in the day many companies had to resort to "cloning the chip" to get around the security (several companies "stole" the IC masks/layout and made clone IC chips).

Will the Neo SNES flash cart contain a CIC chip, a lockout chip defeater, or will it require a real SNES cart for booting?
That is a very straightforward question.  Dr. Neo, can you please answer it for us? Your last answer skirted the issue.

First post here so hello folks :)

Having read through the whole SNES devkit forum, I'm really interested in this new device developed by NEO team.

As I own a tototek flashcart as well, and cherryroms seems to be gone forever, I'd like to ask you some things about this CIC-defeater, you spoke about here...

So, is it some way, to make the cic inside the snes think you have a real cic present or is it just a means to kill the onboard cic like the other regionfree mods reuqire you to do as well?

Ah, and one sentence to Dr. Neo: Pleeeease, make this device capable of remote debugging! It would be the ultimate development kit for all homebrew SNES developers!!! I'd definately buy one, if you did so :) :-*

The way i get around this (I have 2 SNES 1 U.K Pal and 1 U.S.A NTSC)

get 2 games 1 pal 1 ntsc and take out the chip and when i use my SWC on my
pal snes i put the pal chip in my SWC and it works

i got my U.S snes the same time FF3 U.S come out and this game did not work to will on a pal snes back than.

i have some of this chips in my toolbox i think about 4 or 5 as i take them out
when some one give me a broken game.

There's another problem defeating the CIC on the console, as I was told, which is that some carts with some special chips in it, such as the SFX, work in a way that even if you defeat the chip the game won't load.

Normal games have a CIC in the cart so the console will allow the CPU to load the game, but these special games, having a processor in the cart itself, are also cic locked. If you prevent the CIC in the cart to properly communicate with the CIC in the console by defeating the latter, the CPU in the cart will be locked by the cart's CIC. In this case defeating the CIC is what prevents the game to load.

I can't confirm this, but makes perfect sense to me.

Tototeks Flashcard has a socket for a lockout chip, which you can desolder from a original game pak and plug it in the socket.

I don't see why so many people insist on the Newer, SNES Jr. It sucks. Biggest deal breaker for me was the lack of RGB support An original SNES is extremely cheap and seems to be more well built.
