NeoFlash w/ MK1
« on: February 23, 2006, 11:06:22 AM »
Hey everybody,
I have been trying to get my NDS to play some snes roms. So, two questions: How do I load an emulator and snes game (dragon quest) onto my gba cart and select which one to run first. Also, I heard something about having to have a certain type of NDS game for save features (64kb etc...). Could someone please explain these two things for me, I am using neoflash cart with a mk1. I have also tried to boot .nds.gba files with Mario64 in the MK1 (which game should I buy to allow saving and correct booting?). THANKS MUCH,
Ross

i hope someone helps you.SNESds is one of the few things left i really want to make work.ideally, for mk3 as .nds rom,but i also have an mk1.
Sorry im not actually any help, just letting you know snes is pretty elusive so far(but it can be done!)

That mk1 is really going to hold you back.i had moonshell 0.8 with some short videos and songs in it,but you have to keep the rom small.

if you have a flash-cart already,the mk3 2006 package(under 100.00)is a really good deal.mine came today.

you are going to need a mk3 at some point anyway, and saving(and a few other unnamed bugs)is[]this close to being right in the software.

(from what i have read.i hope so-not counting having ear surgery(!),i have not left my pc in FOUR days.well, four weeks, but four solid days now, waiting to save!!!!!)0.6 0.6 0.6.............

anyway, theres lots of good people here, someone will at least try to help, probably.good luck...

I don't run any emulators on my ds (use my computer for that), but I found cory's instructions for using SNES DS.  Here's what he wrote:

SNESDS - you must build the ROM file with the included builder so that it builds in the ROM files. Using the current revision "snesDS.zip (12-13-2005) " from http://www.cs.utah.edu/~tew/snesDS/

you must:
-run snesDS.exe
-add the rom files you want to use (no bigger than 32MB total size)
-click save
-burn snesDS.ds.gba that you just saved to the cart
tested it on XG2005 512 just now, works perfectly with PassMe and FlashMe using Metroid demo in the DS slot.

I posted cory's instructions for SNES DS above (sorry, don't use it myself).

Are you asking about how to save on nds roms using magic key 1??  If so, here's how it works:

There are basically two save types for mk1 (gba saves and nds saves).  You use gst-patcher 3.1 on a clean rom dump, in order to create these save types.  You can find gst-patcher 3.1 here:
http://www.neoflash.com/forum/index.php/topic,875.0.html

'Gba saves' save your progress to the flashcart.  However, except for the 2mbit saves, it's not very reliable, and saves can easily become corrupted (through power cycling and factors basically outside the user's control).

'NDS saves' save to the original ds game cartridge in your magic key.  However, because there are different save sizes, you have to match the size of the save (of the rom you are running on the flashcart) to the one used by your ds game cartridge.

Check out this site for one listing of the save sizes used by various nds roms.

Note that because SNESDS does not have direct access to the filesystem, and because the SNES ROM files are appended to the binaries wrather than part of the binaries, for now it will only load from a flashcart.

Hopefully FS support will be included later so the ROM files dont have to be built into the final burnable ROM (although I have not seen a SNESDS update for a while now).
Those who have come here to hate should leave now, for in their hatred they only betray themselves.

One more quick question, is it important to know the difference between eeprom and flash save files (other than they appear to be different sizes)?

I don't use mk1, but to the best of my knowledge, it's not really important (2 mbit looks like they are all flash, though, smaller ones are eeprom).  NDS saves are generally preferred, so just match the save size, if possible.  If you do that, your ds shouldn't complain when you try to run the rom from the flashcart (since your original ds cartridge has the same type save size)

The various types of save are stored in different ways, but generally they all do the same thing.

I'm not quite sure of the technical differences between them all, which is faster, which is safer, which is cheaper, but from the sounds of it, I'd says it's likely that EEPROM is a lot cheaper to manufacture, but a lot smaller too (sizes seem to range between 4Kbit and 64Kbit). Flash is likely more expensive, but can go up to 4Mbit and beyond.

Hi, so I'm having troubles getting SnesDS working  on my MK1. I made the gba file to be loaded on to my cart and loaded it on in GBA mode and it doesn't work, now I read somewhere that you should  make sure that you don't load any other menu onto the cart and I can't figure out a way to take the loader neo powerkit automatically puts onto it without the program quitting on me, so I'm guessing I'm gonna need another program to burn the file onto my cartridge?

I also tried to load it in DS mode but as soon as I take my card out of the writer the file's gone.

Any help with this would be great!
