SD peripherals possible on mk2/3?
« on: February 24, 2006, 06:29:01 PM »
I was wondering if it was possible(using some coding of drivers for it of course) to use sd peripherals such as sd bluetooth and sd camera card,etc...
It would be AWESOME if that was possible.

Im going to have to guess on this, but I will ask to be certain - I think anything that can work with MMC mode can be used in the SD/MMC slot provided the correct software can be made and that the serial bandwidth is not a problem.

Really? I hope it's true. I wonder why nobody thought of this before...

The difinitive answer from the hardware guru:
The SD/MMC slot can work with anything that will work in SIO mode on the MMC/SD slot - meaning it only uses 4 pins: data, clock and power/ground.

Also, I gather it wouldnt be too tough to make up a dummy SD/MMC card that gives serial access to use any serial device, such as the serial mod that natrium42 did, allowing him to hook up a USB module and a GPS module to his passme mod.

Guess it's a good question -- how close to we want the DS to be a portable computing device?

I dare say this is more of a DSLinux idea than anything else, since it would get the best use from it

I thought you have to have a SDIO (Secure Digital Input Output) slot, but I don't know if the MK2/3 has a SDIO, or just SD.

Anything that can fit in a MMC/rsMMC /SD slot and can communicate in SIO mode (not SDIO mode, that is closed/proprietary) should be workable.

But, I think the only way of coding a driver for such devices(or cards) will only be possible with the data sheet.
