Help with NEO Flash (getting white screens only)
« on: March 28, 2006, 11:26:09 PM »
I recently got a 512Mb NEO flash kit and the first time I popped it into my DS the Donkey Konga homebrew app loaded fine.

Afterwards I formatted the flash rom and tried burning some roms and the DS menu but all I get are white screens, I've tried both the NEO MAX 1.9 and NEO Power kit 2.3 but nothing ever works, do I have to burn something else along with the roms?

My DS' serial number starts with NU416

There are FAQ's here,but briefly:

Use Neo-Max 1.9(you sound as if you have no problems with Slim loader-feel lucky, some do.)
Click"Format",Click"nds loader"(moonshell or not,does not matter,just make sure to support sd\mmc-just leave it alone,press ok,at format....)
Then click"add",and find where you have MK 2/3 Menu V0.6 BETA 2,click"single-ROM",and it should burn the menu to the flashcart.

Then-FORMAT your SD card(you are gonna have to do that a lot, also defrag it from time to time).
I have the best luck from there if I find whatever I am trying to send to the SD card, right click, then send to...(well,its F: for me,but I guess not for everybody.)

Anyway, turn your brain off(this can appear way over-complicated,and it's easy to over-think it),follow this exactly, plug everything in,and your DS should bring up the MK3 menu. From there, you will have three options to try to boot something,it's pretty intuitive.

Let us know where you get, there's slicker guys than me that can help...

ALSO-first time you bring up the MK 2/3 menu, hover over MK3 icon,it will give you the option to "Press Y to Format Menu".Do this.It flashes the menu to a small part of the MK3,and it seems to be a little more secure that way.Format the NEO-Cart,also,but flash the menu first.

This new option, combined with flashme, will allow you to boot nds without a GBA pack inserted(Rumble pack for Metroid Pinball!!!),but thats another story.I haven't went that route myself, even.
So keep it in the back of your mind, but the very back for now.

Good Luck.Going to bed, check your progress later.(please give some feedback,it really helps.)I Feel like maybe the guy who is trying to make this as simple as possible for Joe's(I'm a Joe)to understand, because I am aware of my own limitations.

Then be prepared to run around your house yelling happy things. ;)

Are you talking about the neoflash 512 linker set (the one that includes magic key 1)??  If so, you can't use the menu software.  You need to use gst-patcher 3.1 to patch commercial roms, before flashing them to the cart using Neo Power kit/NEO MAX.

You can get gst-patcher here (links at bottom):

Hmmm.
I was assuming,I guess,that it was the MK3 package-sorry.

No problem... If it's the mk3, your advice is right on the money  :)

I tried to put it as simply as possible.
Sometimes I'll do something P.C. related, that I learned through NEO,and think to myself"how did you know how to do that?"
Sometimes(in my case,at least)we forget how much we have learned, and maybe take for granted what some others have not learned YET.
That's not trying to claim I know a lot,but I do believe NEO has taught me quite a bit.

im getting white screens also.

I installed flashme v7 on my ds. discovered that the mk2 menu 6 beta wouldnt start from my M3: SD card, so I used download and play and then menu launches, I did the copy menu by pressing y and didnt see any errors.

I can browse my sd card that is plugged into the mk2, and i was able to rip my metroid demo ds cart to my sd card.

but when i reboot my ds, it goes straight to the ds menu, if I leave my metroid demo cartridge plugged into the mk2, I get white screens. Am I missing a step or doing something wrong?

thanks,
Troy

if I use Pepsiman's M3powerloader i can boot the menu from my M3 : sd card and it behaves the same as if I download and play it, but still white screens when i start my ds, or straight to ds menu depending on whether a ds cart is plugged into the mk2.

thanks,
Troy

I don't know much about cross compatibility issues with non-neoflash products...  Cory1492 can probably address this (I haven't seen him around recently -- busy as usual I assume).  He owns M3, supercard, and most of the neoflash products out there...

No problem.   I assume you are aware you have the older magic key that is no longer supported here (so more recent roms may not work at all)...  The magic key 2/3 are the current products, and it looks like there is going to be an official mk4 annoucnement as well....

Ok thanks to Liranuna, i got the menu flashed now and can boot directly to the mk2 menu.

my problem was I didnt have the menu on the sd card that was plugged into the mk2

So i used wmb to send the mk2 menu over download and play, then from that menu that started i browsed to the mk2 menu on the sd card thats plugged into the mk2, and it switched to press A to flash the menu and it did it and now i can boot directly to it.

Now to figure out why i went to all the trouble lol, can't seem to load any of my homebrew from it, so now the white screen problem has moved to when i attempted to boot something :(

Thanks for confirming the menu flashing over wmb.  Thanks to cory, I included it in the FAQ, but hadn't tested it as I don't have a wireless setup, so I'm glad to hear it works....

The hombrew support is apparently still an issue (from what I have been reading in the bug report section).  I'm looking forward to the next release (haven't heard what's going to be fixed, but hopefully it will be a substantial step forward)
