Thank you Dr. Neo!!!
I will definitely enter in this compo!

Alright, so I was planning on making a gameboy game, but I realized that having this image in it would take up most of the tiles that the gameboy could hold (if not all). So I don't know what I should do....

I thought of a creative way to handle this.

This is not a problem because you don't have to show the logo in-game - you just have to put it before the title screen. There's only a limit on how many tiles you can display in any given frame, not on the total number of tiles you can store in your ROM (well, there's obviously a limit on that as well, but MBC3 gives you up to 2 MByte of ROM space and I doubt your game needs *that* many tiles).

Wow, this is good news! The homebrew scene lives!

I'll be participating with a Snake-like game. I got inspired by a flash game somewhere. It'll be like a snake game, but with lots of gamemodes with crazy variations... I'll post a thread later when I have something releasable. And oh, a screenshot! (http://i.imgur.com/pbohe.png).

Suppose your platform can't actually display the logo or link practically ?

Either it simply can't - say Microvision - or it would be horribly complicated - say Atari 2600 ?

Well, Dr.neo would have final say on what's acceptable, but I'd guess that if you absolutely can't (like it would be a BIG pain on the A2600), I'd say to make a text display with the info... the contest name and the NeoFlash web url. The idea is that people running it would know it was part of a contest and where to look for more info on said contest.

Hi,

I have a couple questions about the contest.

It says it is for "retro platforms." Does that include Wii Hombrew games?

And it says:

"[5] You must put the NEO Retro Compo badge and NEO website link to your program and show it when start to run."

The badge doesn't include the link though, so does that mean I could just add "neoflash.com" to the same screen that shows the badge?

I would do that or show it as text there or in a different screen. But yes, it looks like he forgot the url in the "official" image... it normally has it.

Yo, I hope the forum stays stable until 20th :p?
Nice to see some action in the homebrew scene... it's kinda quiet due to the "kindof-open" fancy mobile plattforms (iOS/Android).

Btw: Ill take part again this time with some game-port :o

hi Mr. Reaper

a. yes wii homebrew is aceptable.

b. you need put the badge to your screen, and add one "www.neoflash.com" to this screen together or on other page, even just show one time is ok still.

Nowadays 2600 games can have title screens easily (even in BASIC):
http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/169819-the-titlescreen-kernel/

In total I see 7 posts between apps and games..  does everyone submit their game right at the deadline?  I was expecting more for some reason.

Most of the time yeah there's a bit of a rush right before the deadline. I'm not sure there'll be that many entries this year though. I myself will be struggling to get something ready in time...

Yes most people leave their entry until the last minute but there are less prizes this year than any other year and there aren't as many people working on GBA/DS/PSP/Wii homebrew as there were a few years ago, so I wouldn't expect a huge amount of entries.

Maybe a little more time plus a little more publicity is needed.  Somehow not everyone knows about Neoflash even though you guys have made great flash carts for AGES.

I think most people will wait and enter their project at the last day (like me).
 ~sm-58.gif~.gif ~sm-41.gif~
I am still working hard on my entry, but not much time left! So, I'll have to cut some features and enter what I finished by August 20.

Even if somebody didn't start coding anything yet, there's still a few days remaining! You can make something cool!
It's not important about the prize, but sharing new software and enjoy each others creation
 ~sm-60.gif~.gif
I hope there are some entries for older console again this year, like mega-drive, pc-engine etc. (theloon- will you submit a new 2600 game? or maybe a BEX project?)

Good luck to those still working hard to make deadline! I hope you can catch all remaining bugs easily this week (hehe)

If I do a 2600 game it'll probably amount to a couple days worth of coding.  I can't promise quality or completion :)

I know a title screen is easy. What I was saying was a big pain is trying to make a decent 2600 display out of the official screen badge for the contest. Someone would need to make a much simplified version.

Everyone submits right near the deadline, and a few right after if the board has troubles. Dr.neo makes judgment calls on those after the deadline. Like a bunch of others, I've been rushing to get something ready, and for some weird reason, it ALWAYS take close to the deadline to submit, regardless of when you start.

Title screen is easy dawg. :)

I intentionally made it 48x96 because most title screen kernels will double the width of the pixels.

All the contestants making 2600 games please use this!  Er, unless someone has already made a better one.. then cough it up!

It's Aug 20 11:59pm in your timezone. So it always feels like everyone gets an extra day more than me because I'm in Australia and we're 12 hours ahead of the rest of the world :)

I had to code many things and my friend, who is working on the gfx and maps, lost his hdd... ::sm-02::
Holidays with no real "internet connection" are hard (my phone 3g network is ****py here), not much free time too.
So I think the entry will only look like a demo.. :(

Maybe after the deadline passes, some volunteers can post reviews for fun.
Devs love having their games reviewed, and it would give us something to do while we wait for the results.

In fact, instead of grand prizes next year Chilly Willy will be handed three grand challenges and we'll all have to code for one of them:

1. Tie BCX into Chillys C compiler and libraries so we can program in BASIC and output compilable C for the N64
http://bcx-basic.sourceforge.net/

2. Recreate Virtual Reality Studio 2.0 using the Yedi 3D port
http://www.mobygames.com/game/virtual-reality-studio-20/

3. Uses the source to Scratch to make a kid friendly programming environment for the N64

Where be the proper place to post reviews?

Oh, and now that I know about the Neoflash Retro Coding Compo the AtariAge crowd knows about it too.  I'm sure next year will have more 2600 entries.  Not only that, more exposure for Neoflash and their awesome products!

Once the contest closes this evening, Dr.neo generally makes a new area for posting reviews. He also usually collects up the latest valid entries into a single archive for downloading to make it easier for reviewers to get all the apps/games.

BatariBASIC BASIC compiler for the 2600.

That funny to do is my stinky coding.  Still, it proves even a rank amateur can make an Atari 2600 game in a week :)

~sm-93.gif~.gif yeah, Dr Neo, as you can see, your compo is not dead and I'm very happy of that. So much retro entries (don't talk about nds, wii, even if the entries are really nice, but i'm talking about SNES, GBA, VCS, N64, and so on ... Perhaps it's THE good deal, only one APP/GAME section, and 3 prizes, thanks about that !  ~sm-55.gif~.gif

yeah,i'm very glad to see this contest have so many entries still, wonderful  ~sm-46.gif~.gif

only one APP/GAME section
Judging Apps against Game wouldn't make much sense, imho. It's possible to judge whether a game X is more fun than a game Y regardless of technology barriers, and equally to judge whether X is doing the most of its own platform compared to Y (rather than "X is nicer than Y ... oh, wait, Y is an Atari 2600).

But "I prefer m3player over xgalaga because there's only one music in xgalaga and I'll never be 'game over' in m3player" ... well, that doesn't make sense at all (imho)
