0.6 Beta 2 Known bugs
« on: March 17, 2006, 05:27:32 PM »
Version:  NEO MK2 Menu 0.6 Public Beta 2
Rls. Date: March 20 2006

 - XG2005 carts dont work currently (0.6beta 2 confirmed)

 - graphical artifacts present on touch screens path line when browsing SD

 - top screen file description not readable with some JPN ROM files.

 - dumping problems: dumping to an empty card may result in card corruption in the MMC menu/unlinked files under windows (place a file on a empty card before dumping); Resident Evil DS and CastleVania cannot be dumped (Please test other larger carts and let us know your results)

 - Hot swapping and redetecting the MM card does not work.

 - some small sandisk SD cards and large extreme memory MMC cards are not working with the menu, let us know if yours is not working (please provide brand and size info).

 - occasionally homebrew that runs fine with wifi multiboot will not run from the SD card

 - can't flash the menu space (it seems to materialize on specific mk3 units).  In extreme cases, this results in a serious bug: mk3 is no longer able to save/load ANY files, cannot format the menu space OR erase mk2 save without the ds freezing.

NeoFlash Magic Key 2 and Magic Key 3 Boot Menu Version 0.6 Beta 2
basic use guide

While booting, if you have a file stored on the MK2/3 menu flash it can be bypassed (not run automatically) by holding ABXY while turning the DS on (see below in usage instructions for information on how to get a file into the menuflash space).

Button assignments:
Main menu ~ selects device to browse files on
A - opens/mounts/detects selected device
B - unmounts selected device
Touchscreen - touching the device selects and opens it
X - format device (Neo cart or MK3 internal flash)
Y - format menuflash (when MK3 icon is selected this is available)

SD/MMC menu ~ Flash Neo/XG/MK3, manage saves and use files on the SD/MMC card
Current file types supported directly from the MMC menu:
*.nds (NDS homebrew or ROM)
*.sav (MK2/3 2M save files)

A - Boots file if bootable, loads .sav file to MK2/3 save memory, update the MK2/3 Menu Flash with the selected NDS file (available with menu file currently)
B - Back to main menu, Cancels action
X - Flash to Neo/XG cart
Y - Flash to MK3 if present

Neo menu ~ manage/use files on the Neo/XG cart
A - Boots selected file, Saves/loads file
B - Back to main menu, Cancels action
X - delete the currently selected file

MK3 menu ~ manage/use files on the MK3 user flash space
A - Boots selected file, Saves/loads file
B - Back to main menu, Cancels action
X - delete the currently selected file

NDS menu ~ dump NDS cartridge contents to MMC/SD card
  - you will need to reinsert the cart when it asks
A - dump the cart to the SD/MMC card

On the first Use of this menu version:
The first time you browse into or flash to the Neo/XG cart or the MK3 menu, it will ask you to format it. If you do not format it, you cannot store files in that space.

Confirmation dialogs:
There are various confirmation dialogs that will pop up on the touch screen, asking you if you want to load a save file, or save a save file, or flash the file.

In these dialogs, A is Yes/go ahead and do it, B is No/cancel

                                        Basic Usage Guide
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Step 1: Get ready to run the menu
You must first have a flashcart that will allow you to run NDS homebrew on it. Many do, generally all you have to do is disable the boot menu and rename the .nds extension to .gba, but sometimes a specially created *.gba version may be needed.

Needless to say, the most compatible cart with the boot menu will be the NeoFlash/NeoMax cart, flashed using the slim loader and Neo software.

Once you have the menu on your flashcart, you will need to add files to the SD/MMC card.
There are 2 ways of doing this:
*note* if you find your SD/MMC does not work with the menu, also try reformatting it as FAT in Windows.

Method 1:
- Format the SD/MMC card in Windows as FAT32, and place files on it. Clean or unpatched .nds ROM files,
and DS homebrew with the extension *.nds are acceptable. Currently *.ds.gba and *.gba are not useable by the menu.
Method 2:
- Format the SD/MMC card in Windows as FAT32. Put at least one file on it (some small text file if you have nothing else). Dump your DS cartridge to the SD/MMC card using the menu's DS

Step 2: Running the menu
Now that you have the menu on the flashcart, and some files on the SD card (or a plan to do so), you are now ready to run the menu.

First, assemble the components in the DS:
- put the flashcart in the GBA slot
- put the MK2/3 in the NDS slot
- put a DS game into the MK2/3 pass-thru
- put the SD card into the MK2/3 pass-thru

Second, turn on the DS. In a couple seconds the bootmenu should pop up on the screen. If you are getting white screens (or black screens) then you have missed something important.

Step 3: Using the Menu
There are various things you can do at this point:

Update the menuflash - note, you have only 16Mbit (2Mbyte) availabe for menuflash files
- first pick and enter the MMC menu.
- pick an nds file, if it is an official menu release you can press A to update the menu flash, if not you are also able to flash it using the select button.
- next time you boot (GBA cart with menu is still needed) it will automatically start the file you put into the menu flash.
* if you do not wish to start the file that you flashed to the menu flash, but wish to start the menu from a GBA cart instead hold ABXY while turning on the DS.

Manual save management
- selecting a save file from the MM card will give you the option to load it into the MK2/3 save area (you can load any save data this way and choose no to the load and erase options when you boot an nds)
- making a 'dummy' file called "MK2_SAVE" (no extension) on your SD card will give you the ability to force your current save to be backed up without booting a different game, and will also give you the option to just erase the save area of the MK2/3.

Flash the XG/Neo cart with a file from an SD/MMC

- first, pick the MMC logo on the menu. Touch it on the touchscreen or scroll to it and press A
- pick a file on the SD/MMC, file info is displayed on the top screen.
If it does not say "unknown file type" then you can flash it to the XG/Neo cart
- once you have picked a file, press X for a *.nds or A to load a *.sav (it will prompt you with which buttons to use on the top screen of the DS)
- a progress bar will appear, when it reaches 100% it will tell you it was successful and ask you if you wish to continue.

Flash the MK3 with what is on the SD/MMC

- first, pick the SD/MMC logo on the menu. Touch it on the touchscreen or scroll to it and press A
- pick a file on the SD/MMC, file info is displayed on the top screen.
If it does not say "unknown file type" then you can flash it to the MK3 user flash space
- once you have picked a file, press Y and it will say "Flashing MK3".  (It will tell you if there is not enough space on the mk3, delete files or format the MK3 to make space if you wish to flash something else.)
- press A to flash the file, press B to cancel
- a progress bar will appear, when it finishes it will tell you if it was successful

Dump the DS cartridge to the SD/MMC

- first, pick the NDS logo on the menu. Touch it on the touchscreen or scroll to it and press A
- it will then state "Error:Reinsert NDS card"
- either take the NDS card out of the MK2/3 and put it back, or take out the MK2/3 and put it back.
- then press A to continue
- it will be back on the main menu, with NDS selected, press A to detect it
- press A again to enter the NDS menu
- press A again to enter dump mode
- press A to dump the cart to the SD/MMC or press B to quit/cancel the dump

~ if after reinserting your NDS card, you go into the MK3 menu, you will have to reinsert the NDS card again.

Run files already stored on the SD/MMC/MK3/Neo/XG

- from the main menu, pick the device you want to run the file from. It can be a file you stored on the SD/MMC card, or a file you have already flashed to the MK3 or Neo/XG cartridge.
- once you are in the device, use the D-Pad (directional pad) to scroll to the file you want to launch
- Press A to launch it from any of the devices.
If you had run a file before, it will come up with a dialog asking you to backup your save.
Press A to save the MK2/3 SRAM to a file on the SD/MMC or B to lose the save file and not copy it to the SD/MMC
- after a short while the file you ran should come up
If you are running it directly off the SD card, you will be able to see an activity light flashing on the MK2/3

Manage files already flashed to the MK3/Neo/XG flash memory

- from the main menu, pick the device you want to manage files on.
- once you are in either the MK2/3 or Neo menu, you can do one of three things:
1 - run the file
    covered above
2 - delete a file
choose a file and press X to bring up the confimation to delete the file
3 - format it
you must be in the main mk2/3 menu (highlight the device)
press X for confirmation to format the device.

Once a file is deleted, or the device is formatted, there is NO way to recover the files. They will have to be flashed back on, as they are lost.
