« on: June 10, 2005, 01:06:29 AM »
I think we should have one NEO Coding 2005 contest splash , the size is 256 * 196 pix,but should included the words of "FREE NEO Kit for NDS developer" .

hope to see the good design, and we will ask all competitor use it in their product.  ;D

I agree it should be something simple and effective. I'm thinking about something like this:

Good luck finding a good splash screen!

Greetings,
Rob

(I still have the .PSP file so if anyone have idea's to make it better, want to make changes to it yourself or use it to create a better one just contact me). I have 2 PSP files, one with that simple 3D effect and a normal one.
(The NeoFlash title is just the logo from NeoFlash.com)

and then when you tap touch the screen
.

Source for the splash screen running http://www.themikausprojects.com/neoflash/NEOSplash.zip

All you have to do is in your main declare

extern void runNeoSplash();

and then call it after the power on function call (also after the irq init code that sets up the touch pad update code).
It'll run the tile loading and touch screen code and such.
Of course the images look a bit better on the DS.

-EDIT-
Also make sure that you compile and link the file needed (splash.cpp)
Note that the default template makefile should do this automatically as long as the files are in the arm9/source directory

It would be cooler if it didn't have that aliasing/banding look on the green glow, if the glow was smooth instead. (I didn't try it on hardware myself, so maybe that's just an artifact of your image compression)

I agree whole heartedly but I couldn't get the artifacts to go away.  There were way too many colors when I did it gradient like (over 1000)  If you guys can modify it to look better go on a head I don't mind.

The non-image messed up one looks like this
which is much nicer :)

I wrote this program to try and help me out with it (you'll need .net framework for the program to run)
http://www.themikausprojects.com/neoflash/imagePaletteFix.exe
It takes an image tells you how many unique colors there are and then you can set tolerances on it.  You can say anything that is withing 25 on the red 30 on the blue and 27 on the green of this color IS this color and then you can save the image with the swapped colors.

I don't have directions on how to use it, but double clicks are your friend and maybe if someone is interested I'll make a short text or something, but for now if you guys want to fiddle you can.

-EDIT-
Directions :

Click "Load Image" Find the image you want to use and load it.
This will populate one of the boxes with colors and extend its scrollbar (these are the colors in the image and you can move the scroll bar to change the color)

Next to this color box is description of the selected color (R,G,B) double click this box to select it in the filters section. Click the box next to the filters section to bring up a color chooser. This is used just to assign the tolerance values for the R,G,B if you select a color with 25,25,25 then it'll be your color.R + 25, color.G + 25... etc.
Click "Add Filter"
then click "Refilter Image" (this may take some time) but it should tell you how many colors there are now in the image after the filter is applied.

If you want to see what it looks like click the preview image button and if you like what you see you can click "Save Image" (but you'll need to save it as a different name than the original image or it'll crash)

You can add more than one filter at a time. And sometimes the program acts funny.

You should try using an actual image editing program, like The Gimp (free, opensource, available for mac, linux, windows). It's easy to reduce the number of colors (you don't need to though, as DS can easily display 15bit images, but reducing to 8bit cuts filesize)

here, with 256 colors:

Other ideas:

have the NeoFlash logo on top screen slide in from the top edge of the screen
have the green glow be pulsing slightly before you touch it

Well they said they wanted simple so I did it that way.  thanks for fixing the gradient.  When I tried to get gimp to go down to 256 indexed it usually messed up my colors, which is why I made the program.  Must be something that I'm doing wrong.  I'll repost the source with the changes later.

If they decide they want the fancy slide and such, then I'll put the time into it otherwise it ends up being wasted effort.

Ow forgot to add the "FREE NEO Kit for NDS developer" in my splashes.

Here are some modified images that contains it in 256 colors:

There some artifacts in the first one that I can remove but not now since my mobile phone just got stolen so I have other things to do now >:(

If you like the design say so and I might make them better.

http://www.themikausprojects.com/neoflash/NEOSplash.zip

Has been updated with the nicer version of the gradient provided by davr.

It'd be nice if there were some sort of deadline on this splash screen thing, but I guess as long as it's before the end of the comp it's all good.

Why would there be a deadline???
It's not a competition or something, Neo is just asking if anyone has a good idea for a splashscreen.

Which I assume means everyone will have to use it.  And it would be nice to get the one they want way ahead of time, that way I don't have to worry about it last minute.

I'm just using another splash screen (Just a white screen with Neoflash on it) and I'll replace it with the official one as soon as there is one :)

Here is my version, hope you like it  ;)

Cool and pretty simple in my humble opinion.

Available for download HERE
It includes the images in 256 colours. GIF, PNG and BMP format.

Greets.
