Title: MarioKart size different on MK3 than on SD
Post by: yojimbo5 on January 20, 2006, 05:34:11 AM
Is it normal ? When i flash Mario Kart to the internal MK3 memory, when i browse the menu it says 24M where on the SD is would display 32M.

Also, when i play thru WiFi i always get disconnected with the message about not being able to save, blah blah. After i reboot the game, it prompt me to delete the save data since it is corrupted.

Im using Castlevania as boot device.

it's a bug with the current menu -- the filesizes are still not displaying with 100% accuracy.

Yeah, saving is not working right with the current menu.  I get that saving error also with several roms, so it hopefully will get fixed soon.

no, it's busted on that version also.... maybe on the next release...

problem people were having before with Mario Kart is that they were being disconnected, apparently because playing from the SD card is still too slow (long loading times)..

Actually, I think it may not a bug with the file sizes; when you flash to a flash chip the files have to be written in specific size increments, and the file will be rounded to the next highest size increment.

For example, if the flash chip only accepts blocks of 32kilobytes, and I flash a 33kilobyte file to it, it must take up 2 blocks as it does not fit in one, and will then take up 64kilobytes.

Ok ... but once it is on the MK3, it is quite smaller. Anyway.

Is there a FAQ about working saves with the magickey ? Im trying to figure out how it works internally. For example, will it screw up my saves on on the DS card i inserted into the MK.

Should i buy a DS game with 2M of SRAM to make sure i dont have any saving issues with the current rom releases ? Or is the magic key handling this with internal memory.

Dont get me wrong eventhough i have many questions about the key i am pretty satified with it !

HAHAH, teach me to post before reading everything; thanks for point that out, its still not a bug though...

The DS game is smaller when flashed because the clean ROM  files are padded to a specific increment of 1MB (1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,512,1024 etc) but the actual filesystem of the game does not take up the entire space of the ROM file. In menu 0.2 there was an included ROM trimmer, so that you could trim the file yourself and have it take up less space.

Also, using the rebuild.bat I made will also make the ROM the trimmed size.

Darkman: You have to have a game with a 2mbit save space on it for it to save to before it will work with MK1/GST 3.1. Something like splinter cell or madden 2005. I am burning it right now with the NDS_save to check this to be certain it works.

update: darkman, if you use the NDS_save, and use a game like the one I just tried with (Madden 2005) you will not get the save error.

Yeah, saving is pretty automatic and handled by mk2/3 (or should be once the bugs get fixed).  I've included that part in the faq section (item 8 I think under setup).

Basically, original ds cartridge doesn't get used at all.  2 Mb SRAM on mk2/mk3 handles all the saving, no matter what size save game file (serves as temporary storage).  You create that save game file on the SD card for more permanent storage.

Oh well i guess the problem im experiencing with mario kart is not directly related to the saving process. Ill look into the faq for more information.

Now I need to figure out how to fix my mario kart problem.

If you're following all the procedures outlined in the FAQ, and the rom still doesn't work properly, it's more likely than not a bug in the current menu (I had Mario Kart working in a previous version, though).

Once they get all the features implemented, I think they will then focus on greatly improving compatibility.
