Title: How will NOT having the 128Mb Zip affect me?
Post by: WeaponXxX on February 08, 2006, 02:02:32 PM
So I have the MK32006 which does not have the 128Mb zip, how will this affect me? How much better is a regular MK3? I have a 512Mb Neoflash if that helps with your answers. Thanks in advance.

As of now, it makes no difference at all since the zip memory is not used.  We just have to wait and see how it gets utilized...

Personally, I don't think it's going to be a big deal since there are those who have it (mk3 2005) and those who don't (mk3 2006).  Why split the user-base further by incorporating a very important feature that mk3 2006 users can't even access.......

Thanks again Bruce, I thought the MK32006 was supposed to be the latest and greatest till I saw that I had no Zip memory. From what I thought I understood the zip was used as a buffer so of course I was worried I'd be missing some performance over the MK3's with the zip. If its not being used yet my guess is Neo has no plans to use it so cut the zip out of the new models? If they do something with the zip then I agree they'd

Tell that to the MK2 owners.

yeah, well, this subject is kind of pissing me off.i went out of my way to order the mk32005 from divineo us.at the same time,i ordered 2 1g neo-max carts from divineo cn.the order from china came three days later.the order from the us is still on pre-order.however,the mk3 2005(which i ordered)has been out for a while.now my son has my 64mb mk3(neo-max 8g package),i have TWO mk1(came with 1g carts)that i cannot use.i dont think enough people are using this product for there to be a shortage due to demand.im not sure what i am looking for here,no one in this forum or neo-team are responsible for my problem, but i sure wish i had gotten the 2006 just based on availability(it also bugs me that i have so much $$$ invested, and there are people with 0.6 menu already to test.im still using 0.4,so its not a big deal, but ive bought too much product to not have access to all available software.)live and learn,i guess.

The reason I think the .6 wasn't handed out was cause it doesnt work, I can't load games onto my M3 with it, The only thing I can do is dump games and that still needs work. It trimmed my backup of Mario Kart and won't even read my copy of Resident Evil so I could back it up. Anyway .6 isnt worth worrying about. Personally I stored my MK kit away and am waiting .7 and powerkit 2.2

Well...  I just lucked out hard.  I ordered an MK1 for my DS in a moment of weakness (I had held out for this long so far, because I KNEW the technology would suck when it first came out, as I had experienced the same exact thing with my early GBA flashcarts).

Luckally, the company I ordered from was out of stock with the MK1's, and after a bit of research, I realized that wasn't what I would want anyways.  As I was doing research, I realized that the MK3 2006 was just released the same day, so I snatched it in my continued moment of weakness, instead of waiting till everyone in the forums here or somewhere else explained that: "everything works!  the software and the hardware!  couldn't be easier to use! everything's figured out 100% and perfect now...".

Before I even ordered I knew it would be buggy, but it worked enough to play most games, so I thought it would be a good enough time to jump on the bandwagon.

I'm sure if you asked the right person too, you could get a copy of the Menu V0.6_A2 if you really needed it...  But from my experience, Beta programs suck and aren't worth trying, and the fact that the title has an "A2" in it means to me it's the second Alpha, which would work much less.  The only thing I've really been able to use Menu 0.6_A2 for is to run homebrew stuff, since version 0.4 doesn't seem to have the ability to use the touchpad in homebrew.  The Menu 0.6_A2 program doesn't even have the ability to flash games to the internal memory of the MK3.  It just locks up when you ask it to.

On top of that, the Slimloader IV also doesn't work, so I had to use one of my very old (and when I purchased it, VERY overpriced) F2A flashcarts to test the alpha version menu interface out.

Even though I started by not doing this enough (obviously), you really need to research products before you buy them, and decide for yourself (and with the help of some biased opinions of people who might have bought them already) if the product is right for you.

I feel for you though if you did get stuck with an older model.  I spent $4 grand on a killer computer, right before the next wave of killer computers came out, and now I'm sittin high and dry with a computer that cost more than some of my friends cars, but doesn't even have a dual core.

Well, that's not the same thing... when mk2/mk3 were both announced, the fact that mk2 lacked the internal flash was cleary stated in the specs (one reason it costs significantly less than a mk3).  And the mk3 included with neomax has only 128 Mb anyways...

With the mk3 2006, it wasn't as clear that the units lacked the zip ram, though Dr. Neo soon clarified that point....

Of course, if they ever figure out how to incorporate that SDIO feature that cory was talking about (to run roms from the SD card at full speed) , then that would make all mk2/mk3 users happy (and we wouldn't have to worry about constantly upgrading to higher capacity units)

.6 hasnt been handed out because it is still beta.

There have been several test builds since the version that was on the MK2006 CD, I personally think the one included on the CD was just a teaser (and all that was available when the CD's were reproduced), but you are correct in saying that there was alot broken in that particular release.

bruceg: I suspect that there is something in the hardware that slows the SD interface down, and from what I have seen there is something they can do to speed up the software, but I know very little about the file patching envolved to say whether it is even simply possible to convert the SIO (serial cart comms) to an SD at a reasonable speed. Im sure if they see a way, it will be done... if there is a way..
