Title: Some noob questions?
Post by: DieselDS999 on February 13, 2006, 07:25:06 AM
I have some noob questions as i am new to this, i have a MK3 2006 kit. :-X

1. How do you flash the MK3 menu (ex 0.4 to .05)? I have tried with out success by just loading the ROM, and also flashing it. And with Power Kit 2.2 can this now be done with the Slim Loader IV?

2. What determines what roms can be run directly from the SD card? The size of the ROM?

3. The times writen in the ROM descriptions? Are they suppose to be the approximent time it take to flash a ROM to the MK3? Most games that i have tried to flash take alot longer to flash then the time stated, Castlevania took almost 30mins to flash, is this normal?

4. Can multipule ROMs be flashed to the MK3, if so then how? When I flash a ROM to the MK3 it always dumps the one that is already there.

5. Is the ROM size changed during flashing to the MK3? Like if you where able to flash multiple games or programs to the MK3 should i be able to flash 16 games to the 512mb MK3? (16 * 32 = 512)

Any anwser will be much apperciated, I am have fun with this tool, playing other people Homebrew's I find on the internet, and i am hoping I can learn some stuff too.  :)

1) To  flash the MK3 menu, it's best to use Neo Max (not Neo Power Kit).
Format the cart in NDS mode, add the menu rom and click "single rom". It should flash the menu to it.

2) At the moment, it's sort of hit and miss. Running from the SD card is ALWAYS slower and less compattible, but the size of the rom seems to have less of an effect on it, although bigger roms are less likely to work due to crashes because of the data not being transferred quickly enough.

3) It always takes a LONG time to flash a rom, and perhaps it's just me but it seems that the bigger the rom, the longer it takes to flash (As in if it took 5mins to flash a rom that was 256Mbit, then in theory it would take 10mins to flash a rom that's 512Mbit, but in the end it seems to take more like 15mins)

4) Currently, no, but when the menu software is updated, it will be able to hold more than one eventually.

5) The rom size probably wont change, except maybe get a little bigger (if any patching code is added) but always remember that Mbit and Mbyte (or Mb) are NOT the same thing. If a rom is 16Mb in size, it's a 128Mbit rom.

i could be way way wrong, but i was thinking the times you mentioned(in 3)were the time of day the file was created.as long as it does what it does,i try not to think too much about it,for fear of ruining it all(knowledge demons:])

3) I actually noticed this too. I cant account for anything that would cause it in my limited programming experience.

I timed it between % increments on a 512Mbit ROM file, and the funny thing is, it takes only a few seconds (~7sec/%) at the beginning, but it takes much longer (~20sec/%) towards the end.

It could be it takes longer to erase blocks farther along in the memory (blocks need to be erased before they are written), but at any rate it has been put to the "to debug" list for the coders to see.

The new neo power kit 2.2 designed for Slimloader 4 should work fine for flashing the menu to the neo-key.
