Title: Neo Flash Max right for me?
Post by: algorhythm on March 20, 2006, 10:49:00 AM
http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/dd-nds-neo1

I am looking to buy this, but I have a few questions before I buy it from Divineo, and I was hoping someone could help me.

- Does this allow me to play backups of my NDS games that I already have downloaded (YES I own the game.. please don't accuse me of not owning it.  I hate carrying around cartridges)

- Does this allow me to play backups of my GBA games that I already have downloaded (also I own the games, I just want to not carry the cartridges)

- I heard there is a problem with the MK3 that it plays slow?  Is this true?

- Can I run homebrew off of this?  I wish to test out linux, movie players, etc... how big in MBytes is this?  What can I fit on the flash card?

- This allows me to save my games no problem, right?  Like my progress in the games.

- All I need is a DS game to use, right?  Do I have to match SRAM sizes?  How do I find out what SRAM size each game is?  I would love to only have to carry around.

- How does Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! play?  That is my major concern.

Thanks a lot, I will be ordering soon if all goes well.

ok hope this helps

1 - Yes it does.

2 - If you flash a GBA roms/back up to the GBA flash cart (which comes with the Neo-Max)

3 - It depends, If you are booting a game from the MMC/SD then it does play slower. but if you flash a game to the Neo-Max useing the menu it does play faster than booting.

4 - Yes you should be able to run homebrew. The Neo-Max which you have a link to is a Neo-Max 1Gig, this includes a 128 SD card. GBA flash cart of 512M+128M Zip and a MK3 of 64M+32M Zip.

5 - Yes it should save a game with no problam.

6 - Only 1 DS cart is needed.

7 - umm waht number is that? I will try it out for you :)

Yeah, Boblen's post basically covered everything, though I would like to add that the menu software is still a work in progress (save support is still a little dodgy now, from what I'm hearing in the bug testing section)

And to confirm what Boblen said, mk2/3 is slow running from the SD card directly (and compatibility is not high, either).  That's why he mentioned flashing to a compatible cart instead (better compatibility and full speed).

Doesn't this package come with a compatible cart?  Or do you mean an actual DS cartridge?

Look at the sizes of the MK3's included, stuff like that.
There are a lot of numbers involved in NEO products.

It really depends on what you want to spend, though.
Dr.Neo is working(the menu releases)on decreasing the hardware involved,but for now,the 1g Neo-Cart(comes with a (relatively)useless MK1)[Divineo CN is cheapest on that(fast shipping)]about 130.00,and the MK32006(divineous)about 90.00,will provide the highest compatibility.

I have a couple of set-ups(a LOT of NEO stuff)my son uses one,I use another, but this is just my opinion.

Speaking frankly,if your just a dude(or whatever)that wants to do fun stuff with your DS(like me),not a coder or anything, then NEO probably is right for you(reflecting on the thread title there)

So for just playing .nds and .gba and some very basic homebrew, which should I get?  I don't want to spend a lot of money, and I don't mind only having like 4 games on at a time.. I want to order this tonight.

Also, this MK3 2006, does it include everything I need to play both .nds and .gba?  I don't think it says it comes with a GBA flash cart.. does it? If it does, this is the one I think I should order.

Also, what is this M3 thing?  I am looking at a compatibility list, and I see a lot more games are supported by the M3.

http://www.divineo.com/cgi-bin/div-us/dd-ds-m3sdp2

Would that be all I need?  It says NDS games require patching, is that this GST thing I hear about?  Is it simple to patch the games?

A lot of this information is misleading and confusing.. I really appreciate everyone's help.

There are many products that essentially do the same thing.
Apples and Oranges to me.
This stuff allows unpatched(i.e.EASY for me)roms to run.
Moonshell is a pretty cool media player.
ANY NDS Hacking product is a WIP right now.
That's all I know.

What I outlined will do what you want(more or less.)

Not trying to hurt your feelings, but get whatever you want.

I got NEO because that is my 3 yo snapping turtles name.

EDIT-sorry,missed your next post there.
I cant run GBA with the Neo-Key(the"flashcart")
But i think others can.
And it works good,you know?

I don't mind patching roms.. its just is it easy to do?  I don't think asking about the M3 is good here, though.. but is the M3 good enough for a basic backup player?  What you said was really confusing to me.. sorry.

oh my. ;D

Your best bet seems to be the 219.00 MK3 package.
MK3 for NDS
Flashcart for GBA.

This is a basic set-up.eventually you will want a bigger MK3,and maybe a bigger NEO-Flashcart.

SIMPLY-The 219.00 MK3 package will allow you to play GBA and NDS and Homebrew and Media.
The only thing out of reach with this pack are a few larger NDS roms.

ALSO-that stuff on the left there.....
I don't work for anybody, here or anywhere else.I have less of a role than maybe it appears, and I only represent myself.

It's O.K. to ask about other products,if you want.I just don't know about them.
Some guy is babbling in another thread about some ninjads something or other, that sounds interesting, for better media support.I don't know.

I'm just saying,Dr.Neo doesn't pay me(or anyone else,I dont think),and I love him.(in a healthy-Man kind of way)

Get what you want.

219? :(  What's the difference between all these packages?  There is next to no information for a newbie such as myself :(  I am honestly thinking of getting the M3 SD version, since I have a 512mb SD card from an old MP3 player.. would this be sufficient?

And I know I can ask about other products, just some support forums frown on this.  :(

Speaking frankly(then I'm done)
I think I was exactly where you are now,3 mos. ago.0 experience, even with GBA flashcarts.
Count on spending some time getting it running.
It may be easier now than it was(updates are frequent),but you will get pissed, some. You will get happy,a lot.
Hardly any documentation, but plenty of help here.

The cheaper package has a 512mb(thats megabit-learn about that somewhere else here)MK3.this sticks out of the back of your DS,and can store, and run roms.
The MK3 has a slot on it for your SD card(available at any drugstore),which can store and run roms.you write to it on your P.C.
It also has a NEO-Key,which is a substitute to a GBA flashcart. It holds almost no info, but is necessary without a NEO-Flashcart(or any other brand)

The more expensive package has a smaller(128mb)MK3,but includes a 512mb GBA flashcart.
You can't set up for GBA and NDS at the same time(I dont think),but you have the option of either.I do not think you can run GBA(yet-please,someone correct me?)with the cheaper package.

Some roms are 1g(512 x 2).you can get a 1g flashcart, and soon to come is a MK3 1g,that you should be able to purchase seperately, but that's another can of worms.

Good luck, got some Nifty homebrew to check out.....

I know it is difficult to get my point sometimes(i ramble),but slow down, read this(and all over this forum)and you will understand

Thanks for all the help.. I know what megabits and bytes and everything are.. I am a compsci major at college, 3rd year :)

I ended up going for the m3 SD + passme2.. it was more financially sound for me right now.. I may upgrade to the magic key after that, but since I already own the 512mbyte card for the SD, it was the best choice.. and if I don't find it benefical I can always sell it to my friend, since he wants something like that...

but of course, thanks for your help.. you were a big big help :)   :-* :-* :-*  hahaha..

edit: I got it mostly because I have one of the launch DSes, and I don't need anything else insane..

wasn't trying to offend.
Pretty sound mind here, but this stuff still makes me stupid sometimes.

I thought passme was needed only for newer firmware, but it's never something i've needed to fool with(i have a launch DS,and a newer one that seems to have old firmware),so i have no idea what you are talking about.

But good luck.try The Block Kuzushi.fun fun...

Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! plays well.. heheh, I like that Japanese music game  :P ( I'll warn you a little about the loading times, but I -bet- its gonna be better in the later menu's .. but the game itself runs perfect )
