Title: NEO Flash Competition 2006 Results
Post by: Phantom on April 01, 2006, 12:24:47 AM
20 NDS games, 15 NDS apps and 15 PSP apps. That a lot of things to review... but it's done.

We've use 2 public website with polls (Neoflash.com  and Playeradvance.org).
We've merge the result, and build 3 top 10, 10 points for the 1st, 9 for the second ....
4 judges (Darkfader, MickeyMouse, Dr. Neo and myself) have done the same things.
So You've add the points to get the final results. If two entries have the same number of point where classed by judgement

in clear :
Entrie points = Public points (in top 10) + Darkfader points + MickeyMouse points + Dr. Neo points + Phantom point
Then judgement.
 ;)

Question...

What does it mean when there's no score for a judge's column? Does it mean 0 or not judged?

Judgement is judgement. That's all. I'm also 100% against the PSP winner, but it's over, so accept it Payk

Payk, look..

go to the NDS APP area.. look at the "commodore emualtor"'s ammount of votes.. however, it didn't win.. most of the job, is up to the judges   ::sm-04:: .. they just liked Cutrix better, and so did I.. sorry ._.'

i accept it. never said that i dont do. But really dont undertsand the result. Ok i accept that cutrix is better. But please tell me what is better. And if that point makes such a big difference between 6th and loser....

Yeah whats up with the public votes? and what is PA.org? O.O
Its all a bit unclear to me^^
our game might not have been the most fun of all but atleast, _i think_ , we were the only ones with a game(HERO) 100% homebrew :P :P (with that i Mean: no libs, no borrowed graphics, no borrowed sound etc) =)  was hoping for something a bit higher

btw - are these the final results? and congrats to everyone.

IMO your game had some.. rather annoying music x_x; .. I got it stuck in my head for the rest of the day.. it lacks the menu, that cutrix have.. just a tad more quality.. Cutrix had diffrent gamemodes.. it was just.. I don't know.. it seemed more.. "finished"... hope you can use this for further upgrade

PA is a french GBA/DS/PSP Community, with a lot of coders in it (know PA Lib ?)

Public vote have been converted to a top 10.

Your game is really interested, I liked it, but it miss a lot too.

It's final, we will post comments soon.

Its fair that votes from palib are in there? i didnt used it and perhaps.......ahhhh forget it.......i thought in a game devision the main thing is the game not the menue...and that mode cutrix had...I just didnt tooked it because would be unfair. it would be 3 lines more code to have that cutrix mode.....

Phantom ok , but you uploaded our games to that french site? we did'nt have a clue about hehe

PayK I cant say I really understand you comment but we did all the graphics and sound ourselves.

PA isn't PALib, it just to show the job of one member.

For games the most important is the fun, that's not something we can explain. What make tetris funnier than Columns ? Just feeling

(Doesn't apply to apps)

Freemaan - they all had 10  units to give to the games,  as you can see each judge placed  a 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 10.  thats all.

Hoy

1. Is this the final results? Results should delay 2 days and then it was posted 2 hours later, what happend?

2. What is actually judged? Do you just care about how fun it is?

3. Is it even legal to steal graphics from commercial games like some entries do? I don't care personally if you credit the original author.

4. How can totally ripped game ideas get so high??

5. I think that in an NDS compo its important to make use of the hardware
Its not that many games that even use the touch screen, mic or something useful at the other screen (other screen, well we don't ^^).

congratulations to Lira, Bodom, Milpool!

It's really great. I'm really very happy to see my game second.

It's the first game I've coded (I use to code Windows applications), and when I started it I would never think it'd finish second (I also never thought to present it at the compo ^^).

It's just so great!!

And congratulations to all others entries!  ;D

I don't understand as well. Theses vote are a shame! A real shame!

How can AFKIM be placed before FileAssistant++ for example?

Sorry Danzel, but in AFKIM, you need 15 minutes to write a single phrase => it has no utility. I don't understand how people can vote for it, except if the results are corrupted or they didn't tested it (which is 99.99999% likely, looking at the results). It's a good software, but it merits in no way to be first IMHO.

Also, FA++ is so good, has so many features, and it was the first to be there! So many programmers used its source code. I mean, it IS useful for the developpment community, which AFKIM isn't at all. And I tought it was the goal of a contest like this, to make the dev community to advance. But I was wrong.

Also, most entries violated the GNU GPL because they were using GPL code and didn't release their source code.

Shame on you neoflash judges!
And last thing, at the next compo, I'll quickly program a buggy and incomplete RPG because I really want an XBOX.

Not saying anything bad about liras game, but the judge(s) sure display odd behavior.

I judge game on 2 main part : fun and coding.

Lira's game is buggy and incomplete, BUT it's a really good job (We don't see a lot of homebrew RPG going so far) so he get a good mark. RapiDSis "complete" but 100% funless so he don't enter my top 10.

That all.

Thank you ;)

A 4th place is not so bad...
Next year I will present a bigger game (platform game where you play with the stylus only), and I will aim the first place :)

Thank you to the Judges even if one of them only give me 1 point (has he really played my games ? ;-P )

Already did! it was rather a stupid typo :P
i also added a saving system.

What is incomplete about it? magic system and Saving? let's see YOU code a complete COMSTUMABLE RPG engine in such a short time span! I plan to release the source so others can just change a few lines to make thier own game!

See my site and the thread.

Lira - Hehe. one step further on killing  idea, fantasy, skills and orginality in these kinda things :P

When do you plan on having it finished? My contructive critique to you would be the current content of the game, I have not played it through so dont take this all to serious, but content makes a game, especially an RPG.

Well, the game is only missing a magic system now (which is already inside, just disabled...).
Other then that, the game is FULL - having a ~40minutes of gameplay minimum! I know the story isn't that thrilling and exciting, but let's say I don't have what i ttakes to expend the gameplay time :)

Congratulations to everyone !  :)

I agree with people complaining about public votes, most of them are friend points (especially PlayerAdvance ones who support their members), but at last that doesn't really change the results (except for Hero wich deserves better and cutrix who had been lower).
About NF.com votes, I'm sure admins have checked the votes are not from fresh new mysterious users  :P

Special congratulations to Cosmic Invaders wth a pretty decent place without public points !

It's a good software, but it merits in no way to be first IMHO.
When you first sat down at a computer keyboard did you immediately type at 100wpm? Learning a keyboard takes time, I can type at an acceptable speed for instant messaging on my psp after the amount of time I've spent using it. There is a new keyboard coming in the next version.

Also, most entries violated the GNU GPL because they were using GPL code and didn't release their source code.
I'm highly disappointed in those who have violated the GPL aswell, Quake 2 port anyone?

I personally don't really see the point of all the shells, I pick up my psp to do something on it, not to launch an alternate interface.
The PSPOsx paint program was terrible, you couldn't seriously consider painting with that! ;)
FA++ does seem fairly useful for a dev, since you can get slightly quicker copy run debug cycles, but these days I do all my testing on PC (compile my app for pc thanks to SDL, use a ps2 controller for input) and then on psp I use psplink (http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=3834 (http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?t=3834)) for debugging (which is awesome btw).
I don't agree that FA++ should of been first, but I do rate it higher than PSPOsx in its current state.

Anyway, there were many excellent entries and I got to learn about some new apps and libs.

A Great big Thanks to all the people who threw votes my way, NEO Flash for hosting the competition and of course all the devs for your excellent work!
I'm looking forward to seeing more releases from all of ya :)
