Title: MK3 by itself.

I got my MK3 today but to my suprise divineo shipped it without a passkey thing. So curious if I need it or not, when I boot up my DS with a legit game chart + an SD card on my mk3 all I get is a white screen, with that I'm thinking I need to update with flashme and for that I probably need the passkey. My DS version is 1 because it crashes when I pull the cart out in the pictochat. Sigh, is my lucky really this bad or am I doing something wrong?

you need a flashcard or neokey/flash/max..

Your firmware version sounds like it is compatible.  However, like Samsar says, you generally need either a flashcart or neo-key to initially load the menu.
