Title: [Entry] The Stroke of Link
Post by: Yodajr on August 21, 2006, 02:26:15 AM
Hello !

Here is my entry for the NEOFLASH Summer Coding Competition 2006.

It's a remake of a japan PC game : Ruta Stroke.
I took graphics and sounds from a GBA game : Zelda Minish Cap.
I use the great lib OSLib from Brunni.

In the game you have 65 levels, in each level you have to get all the rupees, a sword will appear, get it to clear the level... easy, not ?  ::sm-09.gif::

Controls are simple too : the pad or the joystick to move Link (but I recommend you to use the pad), triangle to play/pause the in-level music (I know it can be annoying sometimes  :P) and start for the menu : try again the level, return to title screen and quit the game.

A screen :

(I had a problem to upload my game to the board : Your session timed out while posting. So I split my rar file in 2 files)

You know "Yodajr" this is a fun and not to mention addictive little game!

I think it could use a better setup for loss's, Maybe a Try Again / Quit screen. Other then that its pretty solid and fun, good work!

Couple things i need to be a critic on  ::sm-02::

Levels are too hard :(  Props for making me think, but when i hit 15, i was pooped... :(

Too slow   ::sm-02::  The effect of fading from one transition to another is cool, but after about level 4, I was kinda sick of getting hyped up, all ready to hit hte ground running, knowing my brain is on fire (path finding wise)... just to watch the thing fade away, then fade in a tad too slow for myself...  Its a really cool effect, but after a while I got a little tired of it  ::sm-02::

A tad too big  :'(  All the songs and sounds really add to the experience, but in-turn, add to the size :(  Im contiplating whether of having good sound and background music, for less memory on my PSP...

I dont know if it was a bug, or what, but randomly, the background music's volume increased very loud and choppy, and scared the sh1t outta me...  I set it to 1 bar for volume, and it sounded like 10 :(  Hopefully it was a little glitch, nothing permanant.

Other than that, good going.  OSlib is pretty awesome  :-*  Oh and please know these are just my opinions, so you dont really need to take them to heart, if anything.    :-\

you dont really need to take them to heart, if anything.
Don't worry, bad critic is good sometimes...

Levels too hard : Hoo I'm sorry but it's the game, if you finish it in 5mn it is not good, don't ya ? think about how much you will happy when you'll finish a difficult level  ::sm-18.gif::

Too Slow : hmm... I understand that you said, but I really love the transition effect, use this time for consider a solution  ::sm-09.gif::

Too big : In fact, you can make it now : delete in data/music all the musicX.bgm (music0.bgm, music1.bgm, ... music9.bgm).
You will earn 7MB  ::sm-29.gif::
But you will have a error message at the loading of the game, just pass it with X and make sure you put MUSIC : OFF in the main menu (push right when you see CONTINUE) it's important, otherwise the PSP will crash when you will start a level.

If you really want it, I can make a version just for you with no transition effect and no music at all (with no sfx also if you want, but they not big : 750ko)  ::sm-08.gif::

Hoo sorry, I didn't make it for the game because it's really boring  :-\
And my poooooor english don't help me  ::sm-02::

In fact, it was just : congratulations (some levels was very hard), jokes about "what link will do with 65 swords ?" (I don't know how translate joke  :'() and credits (brunni : the OSLib's maker, the people who make the graphics and sounds of Zelda Minish Cap, kerupu : who make the original PC game, people of my website : playeradvance.org and... you)
So, thank you for playing  ::sm-29.gif::

I think I fixed the bug with the stick.
If you want to play with the stick, please use this version :

http://hothmoon.free.fr/psp/dev/stroke/Stroke_10.rar (fw 1.0)

A good possibility is being able to skip the fading transition by pressing one of the buttons or Start ;)
Also for sounds, if you check them like that:
yourSound = oslLoadSound(...);
[...]
if (yourSound)
  oslPlaySound(yourSound...);
It will not crash because if sound could not be loaded it will be null and thus not played ;)
