Title: Lights Off!
Post by: arrpirate on August 20, 2009, 10:23:56 PM
Nickname: ArrPirate
Project name : Lights Off!
From : USA
Division : NDS Game
Original entry : YES
Support Motion : NO
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10 : NO

Description:

This is my version of Lights Out. It has several variants built in. You can change variants by using the sliders to the right of the game board and you play the game by trying to turn off all of the lights.

When you click on a button it toggles between its different light settings (in the most basic mode, this is a simple on/off action, but in the more advanced variants there are multiple light states). Not only that, but the lights to either side of it as well as above and below it toggle as well.

Simple Strategy:

In the most basic mode a simple strategy is to click directly below the lights that are on, starting at the top and moving to the bottom. Repeat as necessary until you solve the puzzle. You may have to click on random buttons up at the top of the screen if you run out of lights using this strategy.

I am gonna play this properly later tonight on my ds.  The graphics are sweet and functions really well.  It needs some sound; a title screen and maybe a highscore.

Thanks, Gaz. I did all the graphics myself. The reason it doesn't have sound is that I'm hearing impaired and I was having problems testing sound and I didn't want to just copy the music from my Falling Blocks game. I was running out of time and I figured a game without sound was better than no game at all.

As for the high score, it really doesn't apply here. Puzzles are randomly generated and some puzzles can be done in just a few clicks while others will take a hundred clicks or more. A high score would be meaningless.

And finally, the title screen. The original game, Lights Out! is a very simplistic handheld game. Nothing fancy. You turn on the on switch and there it is. I wanted that for the DS. So there's nothing fancy. You run the game and it's already started. In fact, if there wasn't a requirement for the compo to have a splash screen it wouldn't even have that.

I see what you mean about the high-scores, hence (maybe!)

Agreed, maybe a help button to view the instructions on the top screen.

I still have not had time to play it, it is on my DS though; hopefully tonight :)
