Title: ScummVM DS
Post by: oplaza on August 14, 2005, 09:41:39 PM
How to Get ScummVM DS Onto Your DS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ScummVM DS doesn't currently run on any DS emulator. To use ScumMVM on your DS, you will need a GBA flash card, and a copy of the Lucasarts SCUMM game you want to run. Don't ask me how to get the games, they are still copyright works, so can't legally be copied. You could try eBay for secondhand copies. You can also use demo versions of the games which you can get from the ScummVM website.
You will also need one of the following:

A PassMe (a device that sits in the DS cart slot and redirects execution to the GBA cart slot. You can buy one here.)
A DS modded with FlashMe (You can download the flashing tools here, although you'll need a RTL-2500 card to flash it yourself)
A PCI wireless card that uses the RTL-2500 chipset, and a copy of WiFiMe (download it here)
At the moment, I don't support Wirelss Multiboot uploads, or the GBAMP, two other methods of getting homebrew onto the DS, but the next version may support either or both of these.

The process for installing and running homebrew software such as this on the DS is fairly complex, and you will need a fair amount of general computer skills to get it all to work.

Once you have what you need,

Download the binary release of ScummVM DS from this page. Unzip the archive into a folder.
Store your game files into a zip file, making sure to choose the 'No compression' option. If you don't do this, it won't work. If you have more than one game, put them in different folders in the ZIP.
Put the zip file into the directory with ScummVM DS, calling it 'scummdata.zip'. Make sure the games will fit on your flash card. The total size off the games cannot exceed 30Mb.
Double click on the builddata.bat file to build your ROM image
Using your GBA flash cartridge software, burn 'scummvm.ds.gba' onto your flash cartridge.
Boot your GBA using PassMe, FlashMe, or WiFiMe as appropriate
Enjoy!
If it doesn't work, check that your ZIP file is built with no compression!

Okey? Arent you suppose to mention HexenDS, DSheretic, PocketNES DS, DoomDS, SNESDS, WonDerS [WonderSwan EMU for DS] also? Or did forget them :P

However, looks like its a new release, I have only tried the first release [which only had a demo of Monkey Island].
Will give it a try.
EDIT: The EMU work fine, but it aint find the game in buildata, only empty directory. Anyway, gonna test some other games  ;D
Hey! And thx for the site! Havent seen any other sites which have reported about this new build of this ScummVM yet.

I Have flashed, removed, flashed again, removed, over and over. But it isnt working  :'(
When I booting up the ScummVM, a warning message says: unable to open configuration file: scummvm.in!

:-\

EDIT: and when I tried to flash three different game (3 maps in the scummdata.zip) only one map shows up in ScummVM...And its same there, its an emty folder with nothing....

It's working for me :)
The folder is empty, but just choose "choose" and the game pops up ;)

No, its not... A message will pop up, when pressing choose, and it says ScummVM could not find game in the specified directory
Looks like its nothing there, but the scummvm.ds.gba [which a flashed] are about right a size.

Anyway, it also says [just saw it] ERROR: ZIP file contains compression!.
So maybe thats the answer ;) Gotta check how to remove the compression when creating a zip- file...Oh man, this is frustrating

WonDerS?  :o
Man, now i realize that i´m not really into the DS Homebrew scene -.-

Like Hexen or Heretic, a 0.1 Release is not worth the Burntime of Neoflash  ;D
I think i wait some time.

Woho, succeed to start up MonkeyIsland2! But the sound/music is darn silent, I did even turn up the volume to the highest level, but still its so quiet.
Anyway, I have never used Winzip without compressing something, and it took almost hundred years to figuret it out. Well, back to work!
And hello Splatter, nice to see you here  :-* hehe

Yeah, its great. But i feell some.. exposed. Im left handed so the perfect would be if some key setting- option could be done, so we left handed people can use the right keys when holding the pen with left hand.. (yeah, you get it ;) )

Dunno, same as the first version (darn good). And the sound/music is good too (but darn silent).
I did test Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis on version 0.1 and it worked good. But you cant play the game with speak cause the EMU just now only support 30megabyte gamesize (and the speak in it is about 150megabyte). But the music work fine :P

EDIT: However, I have heard the game could have some big issue, it could crash/freeze etc. Check out the Official ScummVM DS thread for more info: http://forum.gbadev.org/viewtopic.php?t=5307
But maybe it has been fixed in V0.2...

Tried it now. Fate worked, but only for 5 minutes before the first total crash appeared. And Sound is much too quiet.

It works actually fine with me. I did try only with 2 games though, Monkey Island and maybe Indiana Jones, and I was really impressed.
I did try it a couple of weeks ago, but I am not actually playing with it anymore because my F2A flashcart is broken and doesn't allow me to save to SRAM, which make everything useless.
But I do remember that in order to make it work, you have to put special attention when you create the ZIP file containing the game DATA. It' important that you choose "no compression" or whatever other option your ZIP program might give you(if it's even supported), otherwise the application fails to recognize the game data.

Has anyone gotten this working with the magickey? (sd cart)

I've copied it onto the sd cart, but if I do the joining of the scummdata.zip file thing I can't launch it using the 0.5 menu.
If however I use the .nds file it will launch but can't find any zip file!
