Title: Can't change savegame
Post by: Polii on February 06, 2016, 01:39:05 AM
Hi

I lost my savegame for Zelda a while ago and today i wanted to put a new save game on my SD card. Now the problem ist, that is always uses the same save game.

I found a thread with the same problem, but the solution to power the N64 on an boot to menu then turn off and copy the save game didn't help. The savegame never gets loaded from the SD card but the wrong one is always being copied back to the SD.

Does anyone have a solution for that?

Thanks for the help

Could you please upload both the wrong and the right savegame here so I can take a look if everything is alright with the new savegame?

Are you sure that you replaced the exact file name that matches the rom name plus the save extension? Also make sure to use the latest version  of the menu..

Thanks for your file sanni, but it didn't work. I then formatted and reflashed the menu and now there is no savegame loaded at all. I think my myth doesn't check for savegames at all.

Is the Zelda OoT rom also on the SD card or is it programmed into the Neo2 cart's flash?

Can you start a new game in Ocarina of Time and after the intro sequence press start and save the game, then press reset to go back into the Myth menu and then power down the N64 and have a look if there was a save file created for Zelda and then without renaming it put it into a *.zip and upload it here?

Also if you create a new save file this way, will it be loaded next time you start the game?

Yes, the game is also on the SD and the savegame created is also loaded, but not from the SD i think. The created savegame is attached.

Are you sure this the save game from the \menu\n64\save\ folder on the SD?

I ask because it's 100% identical to the save file I uploaded.

Hm, i checked again and now there is no savegame loaded. The savegame i uploaded was from the SD card, but i realized that it's the savegame i downloaded from you.

So now there is no savegame copied from the myth to the SD and there is no savegame loaded from the SD...

what is the version of the menu?
it could even be a hw issue with the interface and the menu fails to write the sd save contents back to nsram...

So any other ideas?

Here are some games that use the same save type as Zelda OoT, you can try out one of those and see if they write the save file back to the SD card. Remember, you need to actually save in-game, not only start the game and quit again.

1080ยบ Snowboarding
F-Zero X
Harvest Moon 64
Major League Baseball featuring Ken Griffey Jr.
Mario Golf
The New Tetris
Super Smash Bros.
WCW/NWO Revenge
WWF: Wrestlemania 2000

I tested it with Super Smash Bros. today, and there is also no Savegame created.

What is the version of the menu you are using? I will try out the same menu version on my N64 Myth and then I'll test Super Smash Bros to see if I can find anything.

After you finished playing Super Smash Bros, did you press the reset button to go back into the menu or did you quickly turn the N64 off and on again to go back into the menu?

Ok, please try to start Super Smash Bros with A(reset to menu) and then after you have switched the Audio setting from Stereo to Mono inside the Super Smash Bros option menu(just to see if it saves the option) use the reset button to go back into the N64 Myth menu . Then load another game and then load Super Smash Bros again and check if the audio setting is still on Mono.
In my case it was, so it did save correctly, it also did write the sra file into the "menu\n64\save" directory.

What you can also try:
- check wether or not  there is a file named ".fast" in the "D:\menu\n64" folder on your SD card, if not then your SD card is not perfectly compatible/too slow
- in the menu when hovering over Super Smash Bros, check with the Z-button that the selected save type is SRAM.
- maybe formatting the SD card could help https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/ (be careful when using this tools and don't format the wrong drive, also backup everything from the sd card because it will be deleted)
- check if the GBA cart is firmly seated into the N64 Myth GBA slot, maybe pull it back out just a little if the connection isn't tight

Other than that I don't know what else could be wrong but I will search through the forum and maybe I can find a similar case from the past.  :(

I followed all your steps, but poorly there was nothing saved. After changing the game and loading Super Smash again, the Stereo setting was active. So of course there is no save on the SD either. I also tried formatting the SD card and i checked for the .fast file, which is present. The savetype is also correctly on SRAM. The GBA cart should be inserted correctly.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

try another sdc or rename the file to .slow . it might be a sync issue with sd writes ..if not , then it is most likely hw issue

The SD card i tested it with is already a new one. isbthere any kind of warranty on the product? Or do I have to buy a new one if it is a hw issue?

try "Dr.Mario 64" this game, fill in the name and save then exit from the option, turn off,and turn on console.
if you can see the name still, then it's not the HW issue.

I can't test it with Dr.Mario 64 because it is only available for NTSC, and I've got a PAL N64.

The SD card i tested it with is already a new one.

Eh ?  ???
I asked you to to try a different SDC from the one you're using or force it to slow mode.

What I meant is that the SDC I'm using at the moment is already a diffrent one than the one i used when I started this thread. But i tried the slow mode today and there is still no savegame created.

Here is one more thing you can do:
- Make sure that the menu verison 2.6 is flashed
- unplug all controllers
- start the N64
- you should see a black screen asking you if you want to do the self test
(http://i.imgur.com/JdvG3mg.jpg)
- plug in a N64 controller
(http://i.imgur.com/lOQVCgO.jpg)
- use the controllers A and B buttons to select the thing you want to test
(http://i.imgur.com/fxmzekO.jpg)
- test all the available things and see if you get an error somewhere
(http://i.imgur.com/HPWPo7y.jpg)

If you don't get any errors then maybe your SD card or the connection between your SD card and the Neo2 cartridge if faulty. But in this case loading roms from SD card should fail too I guess.

So i made all the tests, and I got three errors. The first one was in the ZIP Ram test in which there was a mirroring detected. The other two wherebin the two SRAM read test which were both marked as failed.

As far as I know the "onboard sram" is where the save game is stored before it's backed up to the sd card. If that test fails, implying that the sram is not working correctly, then yeah, it can't save anything.
The "onboard sram" is a part on the N64 Myth cart itself. I could be mistaken though, I read through the source code of the menu but my coding skills aren't very good and it's still hard for me to read through code that has fewer comments.
