PCX Files (for PCXtoSNES)
« on: May 09, 2012, 05:31:14 AM »
What program do you guys use to make PCX files? I've looked around, and all I can find is some really high level stuff that isn't really compatible with what I'm looking for. For example, I'm supposed to make a PCX with max 256 colours and it needs to be 'indexed' (according to a tutorial by Bazz).

The tutorial supplies a sample INC file, which works fine, but when I try to make my own, any software that I can find to make a PCX file (for use with e-kid's PCXtoSNES program), it doesn't give me the option for 'indexed' or number of colours. I have tried Paint.Net with the PCX plugin and GIMP. I was hoping for something a little simpler for dealing with 8x8 and 16x16 tiles.

Any suggestions?

Save to BMP, then make your own python/perl/C/C++ console proggy to convert BMP to PCX. The formats are hella-simple to read and write.

<shameless plug>

This converter can generate SNES tile data and can read BMP/JPEG/PNG/etc.

Yeah, if you need the tiles anyway, just use sixpack.  :D

SNES emulation started in DOS days, and PCX was a common image format used by DOS graphics programs. Now though we have other graphics formats, such as BMP (uncompressed) and PNG (compressed) graphics formats, now that we are in the Windows era. I'm surprised that SNES hackers haven't created new graphics tools by now for SNES development in the more modern era.
