GBA roms and MK3
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:03:00 AM »
Hello,
I got my shiny new NeoMAX MK3 today and it's working great for the most part.
But the problem is, I'd like to be able to play GBA games as well as NDS games, however it seems that as of v0.5, the menu doesn't support anything GBA related, or have I just missed something?

The way I understand it, you have to burn the MeoMax menu in NDS mode, which means you can only store one file (the menu), but you can access the cart via said menu. But as I said before, I can't seem to flash .gba games to the flash cart, is there any way around this so I can play both NDS and GBA games at the same time?

Not at the moment, GBA from the SD card is not supported, because when you are in GBA mode, the DS slot it's automatically excluded.
It might be implemented in future versions, but it's a tough call.
I think the best way to achieve that would be to have an option to boot the DS menu(for DS roms) or play a GBA game from the cart(when you first switch the unit on),but that it's up to the coders.
Hopefully they might be listening!

Eventually, when .gba rom suport is added to the menu, my understanding is you will be able to flash gba roms from the sd card onto the flashcart to play.  Cory mentioned that gba mode does not have access to the DS slot, so you won't be able to play gba roms directly from the SD card.

That's depressing...........I thought my neomax was going to gba compatible.  More bad news...............Looks like a might HAVE to get a supercard to achieve what I wan't to.
realy, it's all what you make of it............

Your NeoMax is GBA compatible. The boot menu is not. Try NeoMax software instead:

Is there any way of flashing GBA roms to the flash cart alongside the bootmenu?

yes, when the boot menu eventually supports flashing gba roms to the cart from the sd card.

I kinda assumed that, I mean is there a solution....NOW....
It's just a bit of a hassle having to flash the cart every time I want to play a DS game if I've just been playing a GBA game and vice versa.

yeah, it's definitely a hassle.  but we all have to just wait for the coders to implement gba support alongside the menu (they're working on implementing other primary features now to further unlock the capabilities of the mk2/mk3).

the new MK3 w/ Neokey cart..
I am planning on getting this cuz it cuts out the cost of a flash cart. BUT if im reading correctly the cart can only hold menu. so GBA wouldnt be supported with that setup? Is there emulators for GBA (or anything else like NES, sorry im a newb to the DS) that work only on the MK3's SD??? or can the MK3 Run NDS and NDS alone? How long do you think[take a guess] it will be before we can run gba on mk3?

You can use the flash cart to store GBA roms too, just you will not be able to store GBA roms AND the NDS menu at the same time (It's one or the other)

From my interpretation of the announcement, it doesn't look like the Neokey has any storage for roms (appears it's used only as boot device for the menu, which will eventually get stored on the mk3 itself)

Yes, gba roms will have to be flashed and run from a separate flashcart, when the menu eventually supports that feature.   You won't be able to play gba roms directly from the SD card, since gba mode has NO access to the DS slot.

Cory, please correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like you won't be able to run gba roms if you don't have a separate flashcart, and only have the neokey and mk3

Its true, without a GBA cart GBA roms will not run (GBA has no access to the DS slot _at_all_) - emulating GBA from NDS mode is not a possibility at this point (and likely will not be in the future as well)

thanks, cory....  I have to add that to the FAQ section when I update it for mk3 2006 (that's a really important point that I don't think many people are aware of)
