Play N64 Roms on your DS???
« on: January 25, 2006, 01:05:43 AM »
Is it Possible,or going to be possible,to Play N64 Roms on your DS? I know...or at least I think, because I havent tried yet, that you can play SNES roms,so is it going to happen with N64 roms?  I think they would fit on a GX flashcart.

I very much doubt it will ever be possible. PCs can't even currently emulate N64 perfectly and to get good emulation out of one requires alot more power than the DS can deliver.

quick answer: no!  >:(

it usually take a "5 times as fast" machine, to get a decent result.. while the DS might indeed be surpassing the N64 to some point: it doesn't contain the same hardware!.. the hardware is the keypoint in this case..

an "emulator" sets up some code, that turn the N64-hardware specific code, into something the DS can handle.. aka, it needs way more power than the original machine..

Hope I cleared it out  8)

I guess that answers that question,I am very content with what we can do now with the MK2/3 with the NEO Flash Cart, plus if they (nintendo) 8) follow in the same footsteps of Super Mario 64 we may be seeing more Dual screen enhanced N64 favorites crop back up.

yeah, super nintendo is fairly easy to emulate since the system requirements aren't that high.

Nintendo DS, as people have already mentioned, may be more powerful that a N64, but the emulator generally has to mimic an entirely different hardware (in software), and the CPU frequently handles the majority of the tasks.  So, even if it's possible, it will probably run way too slowly to be playable.

There is an N64 emu for the gamecube that uses a emu that is built into the OOT game and/or the Zelda collectors Series..whereas its been extracted and then you inject an N64 rom into it and burn onto a DVD or stream from your PC,but of course the Gamecube processing power (I think is like 400 or 500mhz) is probably alot more than the DS. It is plain to see though that Super Mario 64 DS was probably entirely rebuilt for the extra characters and touch screen stuff,so there is probably no kind of emulation going on there.  I tried using SNESDS and I couldnt get the rom to flash to the XG cart...what should I be doing here?? anybody know? or are there any better SNES emu's for DS out there? The gamecube is easilty 4-5x more powerful than the N64. Plus I think the emulator in there was coded by people with access to the origional devkits for N64 and GameCube, making it (possibly) easier to optimize.

Mario64 DS was recompiled for DS wrather than emulating a N64 on the DS.

There is no better SNES emulator for the DS. SNES advanced for the GBA though, that one is supposed to be better.

SNESDS - you must build the ROM file with the included builder so that it builds in the ROM files. Using the current revision "snesDS.zip (12-13-2005) " from http://www.cs.utah.edu/~tew/snesDS/

you must:
-run snesDS.exe
-add the rom files you want to use (no bigger than 32MB total size)
-click save
-burn snesDS.ds.gba that you just saved to the cart
tested it on XG2005 512 just now, works perfectly with PassMe and FlashMe using Metroid demo in the DS slot.

Those who have come here to hate should leave now, for in their hatred they only betray themselves.

I am using menu V0.4 and I hit all of the buttons and the "Flash to Cart xx" does not come up...??? will it work with menu V0.5 ??? I just dont want to have to reformat and change menu etc.. the only way I can switch between using menu is by reformatting and flashing the cart again....BTW...I am  using Magic Key 3 with Super Mario DS inserted.

I think cory is saying that you follow his steps and flash the .ds.gba file directly to your flashcart using Neo Power Kit.

You don't use the menu software for any of this (it will actually get erased from the gba cart).  You have to re-flash the menu once you're done with the emulator.  If you use Neo Power kit, you shouldn't have to re-format anything.

The only thing that I can succesfully flash so far with the NEO Power Kit are the menu programs. I tried flashing other things directly to it and they dont show up for some reason... I will give this try tonight. Thanks

For homebrew, it's generally a .ds.gba file that is flashed to your flashcart.  If you're flashing homebrew to the SD card, it's generally a .nds file

Homebrew should flash properly onto the cart (you can check the FAQ posts section, and cory's 'Basic Usage of Neo Power Kit' FAQ, to try to flash a test application onto your cart to see if it works...

No, Neo Power kit doesn't have specific game settings..  If rom isn't working, it's generally a compatibility issue cause by the software (if bugs are reported, they try to fix them in later releases)
