Broken MK3?
« on: April 11, 2006, 10:19:50 PM »
To start off with, I have a 512Megabit NeoFlash cartridge, a 128Megabyte SD card, an MK2 and an MK3. I have a Version 2 firmware DS flashed with FlashMe Version 7 capable of booting directly to the MK2 menu.

I've followed the following instructions:

1.Flash the menu to your Flash cart
2.Put the menu on your SD card
3.Turn your ds on with SD card and Flash cart inserted
4.Go to SD menu
5.Highlight menu nds file and choose flash to menu option

Here's the problem;

My MK2 works fine, the menu flashing procedure went perfectly. However recently my MK3 messed up when I turned off my DS, it was no longer able to save / load from the inbuilt save buffer. I've tried following the instructions above with my MK3 and it freezes when trying to flash to the menu space, it also freezes when I try to format the menu space. It also freezes when I try to boot a game and select the 'Erase MK2 Save' option.

I can use my MK2 fine but I'd prefer to use my MK3 simply out of convinience, does anyone have an answer for what could be wrong with my MK3? Should I just throw it out as junk?

I remember one other user reporting a similar type of problem with the latest beta software.  He was using flashme and flashing the menu to the mk3 as well, and suddenly was no longer able to save.

You may have already tried going back to previous menus to test (it didn't work for the other person).

There are definitely bugs with the menu flashing procedure (which may or may not show up, depending on the specific mk3 hardware you own)...

I'll add this to the bug report list...  Hopefully, a future menu release can recover your mk3, since it sounds like a very serious bug that makes it basically inoperable.

Sorry I can't be of more help here....

Reported in list of bugs for 6A2.  I'm hoping it's a software issue that can be fixed, unless you were unlucky and got stuck with a defective unit.

This is the thread that seemed similar:

I've checked the thread and that's the exact same situation that I have, it should be a software error rather than a hardware defect, hopefully it'll be looked into shortly.

Grab a save file, any save file that is 256K and toss it on your MMC/SD card. You should (hopefully) be able to select it in the menu and load it to the save space (I had this problem in a non-public beta and this was the fix that made my MK save start to work again)

I've just tried that now and it freezes at 98%.

I guess it comes down to: which MK3 are you using?
The MK3 512+128 and MK3 64+32 have some menu flashing bugs that I have been able to find, and probably others because of that bug. Let me know the specific MK3 you are using and I will try and reproduce the problem (isolate it to software or hardware) and see if I can fix it.

I am unable to reproduce that problem on my units using 0.6b2, I have brought this thread to the attention of someone who knows alot more about the internals and the software. Hang onto it for the time being, I am fairly certain its not borked - from what I can see mine halts at 98% and flashes something to the menuflash during the last 2% when restoring a save, it could be that something in the settings area is simply corrupt in which case this problem should be fixable from the software. If you are in a rush on it, give me a PM (it wont hurry the other guy up, but there is something else you could try).
