You can either wait for the menu or get the Nero programer if you want to get the latest updates fast.

No there is no other way to program the core  ~sm-39.gif~.
The compatibility is already high even with the old core so you can just wait for the menu if you cannot buy the nero programmer now.

is it possible to play for example neon genesis evangelion with a future menu without the need to upgrade the core?

Of course since the menu handles the sram/eeprom banks  ::sm-29.gif::

The old core uses different addresses for the hardware (among other differences). Given the menu doesn't even exist yet and I updated my cart, I can't guarantee the old core will work with the menu at all. If it becomes a problem in the future, I'm sure NeoFlash will set up some kind of system to update old carts. It's just a matter of shipping the cart to someone with a programmer who updates the cart and then ships it back. Even if NeoFlash didn't, users could set up their own way to update carts through volunteers.

Don't get too worked up about core updates right now. It's quite likely we'll see several updates before things are done. We could see 1.2 tomorrow for all we know right now. Early adopters always have to be a bit more patient, so let's just chill out a bit.

The funny thing is i didn't even looked at the 1.1 hardcoded addresses  which pretty much every constant changed ::sm-29.gif:: ~sm-40.gif~.

Variable addresses would be possible but no one can't guarantee that it will work & will be supported after a couple of core revisions.
 ::sm-16.gif:: ::sm-01::

But it will be interesting thing to do , unless the core has other critical updates other than what we can see here.
