UT got its second win against Kentucky this season
« on: August 02, 2019, 12:02:53 PM »
— Tennessee basketball is facing a familiar scene Sunday afternoon in Nashville.

For the second time in eight days, the Vols will run into an Auburn team with a championship on the line. And they’ll be hungry for a different result than they experienced on March 9 in Alabama.

“Those guys denied us a regular season championship,” guard Jordan Bone said. “We have to go into Sunday understanding that can’t happen again. We are competing for another championship.”

Tennessee lost 84 80 at Auburn in its regular season finale to fall away from a chance at a second straight SEC regular season title. Instead, LSU was the sole winner of the league title and the Vols finished tied for second with Kentucky.

Now, Tennessee has a chance to claim its first SEC Tournament title since 1979 after dispatching the Wildcats 72 68 on Saturday, which leads to another clash with Auburn on Sunday 1 p.m. ET, ESPN .

“That is our goal — to win championships,” guard Lamonte Turner said. “That is why we came here. That is why we came to Tennessee. That is what we have been working for since we got here. We have a chance to win a championship. We didn’t get one in the regular season.

“We have a chance to win a championship against Auburn, so we could get a little payback I guess you could say. We are looking forward to it.”

Tennessee was done in by good shooting from Auburn last Saturday. But the Vols also had too many turnovers 13 and attempted 28 3 pointers — their most in SEC play this season.

Bone stressed Saturday in Nashville that Tennessee had a brutal film session after that loss. He said Tennessee will need a different mindset if it wants to win the tournament title.

“You could tell on film, it didn’t seem like we really wanted to win that game,” Bone said. “We felt like it was going to happen for us. That is something we have to notice before Sunday . We have to talk about it and we have to discuss it. We have to do whatever it takes to win.”

Tennessee held a six point lead at halftime against the Tigers, but it could have — and probably should have — been greater. UT had four turnovers and a shot clock violation in the final five minutes of the first half, when its 11 point lead shriveled to four.

Auburn wrecked UT’s advantage quickly in the second half. Auburn made 13 3 pointers in its win, led by Bryce Brown’s four. Jared Harper provided the daggers https://www.kentuckywildcatscenter.com/malik-monk-jersey-c-5.html, hitting a pair of 3 pointers with less than four minutes to play

“Coach said after the game we really beat ourselves,” Turner said. “I really feel like we did. … We had a film session after the game that was just kind of being honest with each other. That is one of the things we corrected. Bad shots. I think going into this game Edrice Adebayo Jersey, we will have a better idea of who we are and we will play to our strengths.”

Tennessee has done a better job of that at the SEC Tournament. The Vols handled a tough Mississippi State team in the quarterfinals https://www.kentuckywildcatscenter.com/mychal-mulder-jersey-c-7.html, led by Turner’s defense and passing and a highlight dunk from Schofield.

Then UT got its second win against Kentucky this season after a dramatic comeback in the final three minutes in Saturday’s semifinal. UT flipped an eight point deficit to advance to Sunday’s title game for the second straight year.

The Vols came up short last season. They also came up short at Auburn with a title in play a week ago. They expect a totally different game this time around and will be after a different result.

“They denied us one, we can’t let them deny us another one,” forward Grant Williams said.
